ohshi, didn't realize it was e^x - x^10100140214.

Either way, you can do some simple manipulations to make the quotient work and get the same answer. yes, it is supposed to be factorial, but either way it doesn't really matter because it's a constant and you already knew that and now I'm blabbering.

Now reach is basically doing the same limit stuff that shash considered wrong when I did it for inf - inf.

In using limits, you can say functions are a higher magnitude, and therefore, always beat out lower magnitude funcions. constant < logarithmic < polynomial < exponential < factorial < (I'm sure there's higher, like x^x, but that's enough).

From this, in terms of limits as x approaches infinity, log (x^28918219829189) < the 3848484844894394893843 root of x, x^googleplex < 1.01^x, 99999^(10000000x) < x!, x! < x^x.

Edit: be careful about x! and x^x though, since I now thinking they're definitely not an entire magnitude apart, since even (2x)! > x^x.

You are wrong. 0/infinity is defined, and a statement like yours can be proven false with one counterexample.

Stop learning it. It only leads to annoying and useless information in the higher level courses.

You take arithmetic, then algebra, then geometry. That's all you'll ever, EVER need.

I used calculus to figure out how long to cook a digiorno's if I didn't want to wait for the oven to preheat first, but just wanted to put it in there, turn the oven on, and then not worry about it until it was done.

edit: but that is all I've ever used calculus for in real life so far.

There was this one time I saw a legitimate excuse to maybe try to calculate the "can this ladder fit around this corner" problem.

Then I decided instead of wasting half an hour figuring it out and probably getting it wrong, I'd go ahead and just try. What do you know, it fit.

Worst of all is when professors are like "NO CALCULATORS. NO NOTES WITH FORMULAS."

That's totally realistic on real-world applications right there. When working, you'll never ever be able to look things up on the Internet. You'll have to pull it all from memory and do all the work on paper.

I don't really want to get into this too badly... but... seeing as how infinity is obviously a positive number because any positive number is larger than 0 (what exactly is zero?) and infinity is the largest possible number, and any number below 0 is negative therefore infinity is a positive and wouldn't infinity-infinity=0 and not undefined then? because what positive number minus itself is something other than 0

Formulas, okay whatever.

But calculators. What, do you doubt my ability to do basic multiplication? Would you prefer I wasted good paper multiplying out 17^6, which you're just going to skip over anyway, rather than hit five buttons and be done with it?

THIS IS NOT THIRD GRADE. YOU DO NOT GET MARKED ON WHETHER OR NOT YOU SHOWED YOUR WORK FOR BASIC ARITHMETIC. And yet every year I get some substitute douche who says, "hey what are you doing with those calculators you have pencils and paper use them"

inf = inf

The only problem I could see is if you said, "WELL IT'S INDETERMINATE" but even then you can't say that they're going to be two different imaginary (bad word to use considering the context but whatever) values.

because tokzic, infinity minus x is infinity, yet x - infinity (if x > 0) is negative infinity. so the rules are in opposition, hence undefined.

This post really hurts me, even though I know Squeek is free to post his opinion on these things, and he didn't do anything wrong. I have been a math freak all my life, and I don't like it when someone tries to say it's useless, and I refuse to even believe it. To me, it's most of the other subjects that are useless, beyond a certain level. I feel that this quarter of my college is torture, and so will each successive quarter, until I get to where I can take more math. Stupid AP classes at my high school, so I can't take math enough quarters at my community college, until I get to my four-year university. I know this saved me money, but doing math > just about anything else, even playing FFR. I spent 3.5 hours of my day helping people with math in the math lab today, and I enjoyed it.

I know I've messed up a lot of things about math in these forums, but I am really good at making up my own math, and at doing math classes/math tests. The last time I took the AMATYC, a math test, at my college, not only did my college place 7th in the nation, but I got the highest score at my college, out of 215 student mathletes, with a 28.5, with second being 23, and third being only 19.5.

I guess some of you think you don't need math, maybe if you are going into certain other subjects, so maybe I shouldn't be so unhappy about someone else's point of view, but I feel like my whole life has been declared annoying and useless information.

P.S. ValoTV, you need to learn some more about math.

Then talk to aperson who also seems to think mathematics is a worthwhile pursuance. The rest of us are fine with algebra and geometry.

I cannot think of a single occupation in the world OTHER THAN A MATH PROFESSOR where knowing formulas by heart and being able to do calculations without the use of a calculator is necessary. If you think otherwise, let me know.
