As far as that's concerned, 古典, 'koten' literally means 'classical' or 'classic', but I'm not quite sure how they would differentiate between the use of that or the katakana word.
EDIT: So 古典音楽, 'koten ongaku', means more or less the same thing as クラシック音楽, or 'kurashikku ongaku'.Last edited by Belgarion; 03-19-2008, 12:22 PM.Comment

Rikaichan and Tangorin confirm クラシック音楽 for "classical music," obviously referring to Western, and "クラシック" for simply classical.
For more specification:
バロック音楽 - Baroque Music
ロマン派音楽 - Romantic Music
