        Re: Hurricane Irene

It's actually peculiar that we still have power because a friend a few streets over lost power already. But we have a generator just in case either way.
And yea, looking at the radar and it's saying that we're in the yellow/orange and it isn't doing much. That's what Frankie was trying to say before. So either the radar is incorrect or it truly isn't much to worry about.
Also, you can't really go off of meteorologists' predictions much anymore. They have said that this storm would be a category 4 and a tropical storm within the same day. I say just ride it out and don't be stupid.

My mom just walked in saying that it was thundering but I haven't heard it yet. Probably because Frankie's FFR music and tapping is too loud :X

        Stay safe.

I drove through a few heavy storm bands just now, just the occasional 15 minutes of extreme heavy downpour, I was crawling along CT-15 at 20 miles an hour because the visibility was so bad. Town curfew set for midnight and a tornado warning added to a long list of other warnings.

              Re: Hurricane Irene

The only area that Irene was forecast to be a category 4 was off the eastern coastline of Florida, parallel to Jacksonville. That never happened - it kept category 3 wind-speeds for a while, then suddenly started decreasing at a pretty gradual rate (wind shear, possibly?).

This was also when the Northeast was expected to get hit with wind-speeds of 100-110 MPH, when the hurricane was first forecast.

Also seems like that tornado threat that was mentioned earlier is going to be much more widespread - there's already warnings out for the southeastern portion of PA/southwestern portion of NJ.

Thankfully I live in Ottawa so I won't be getting hit. Best of luck to those affected though.

It's suppose to hit Long Island directly with Cat. 1 sustained winds. Storm surges late this evening +high tides + 10-15+ inches of rain = flooding. If you're feeling brave buddy, best wishes to you.

I have family in Nassau county. I really hope they'll be alright.
It's actually up to 10 or so right now... which is actually really, really incredibly low.

I'm not saying hurricanes aren't powerful. They'll certainly kill you if you happen to get hit by a tree branch or if you brave the weather and end up in a car accident. But this just goes without saying.

There's a huge difference between overreacting to ignorance and fear and doing nothing. The best way to treat a situation like this is to take it at face value. Yes, it'll be a decently strong force that will break trees and probably wreck quite a few houses/buildings and shatter windows/etc. It'll cause a decent amount of flooding. But it's not like it's the end of the world, and there are very simple precautions you can take to maximize your safety.

You can spend like ten minutes learning a bit about the raw data and the historical/statistical implications and you'll find that (in my opinion) there's a huge level of overreaction compared to the level of damage this thing will actually inflict. It'll be a large inconvenience, but protecting yourself here is easy. It's not like we're getting hit with the shit you get over in, say, Hong Kong.

Nothing happened to my family really, just light outage. Wasn't really worried in the first place... they don't live near any tall trees or anything. Which was the cause of like 2 deaths down in VA. Maybe 3.

No loss of power where I had to evacuate to.

The lower section of the apartment building where I live, though, is submerged in water. And they had to cut power to the surrounding area out in west Hoboken due to multiple fallen power lines in the water.
