look to see if it's possible to build up or alter your layering strategy every time it repeats
if not just chuck it out i guess?Patashu makes Chiptunes in Famitracker:

Re: FFR Community Pack II (new thread)
The part after the guitar solo came in with some more bass, which I layered in, but it's like the third repeat so yall probably quit out before that lol.
Meh, I might work on it, but probably not... I may start a new, shorter, less repetetive song.

Re: FFR Community Pack II (new thread)
if you think you can make it more interesting/less boring by moving stuff around feel free, its not like its a hopeless file. tbh though i think you could do better with a different song, you clearly have the mechanics down

edit: just read this all the way -.-
this is a pretty ridiculous and self-defeating criticism lol. you are asking me not to judge on technical accuracy alone (which i never do) and simultaneously demanding that i don't factor in my own personal preferences when it comes to the fun factor of a simfile. you aren't dumb, you have to understand that simfiles are entirely subjective in their qualification and that fun factor can't be objectively measured and balanced against technicality in the judging process. personal preference by necessity has to play a role. as someone who has played this game for more than 2 years and has made dozens of files for all mediums and audiences i feel confident in my ability to rate how good i think a file is and that is, or rather, -has- to be enough to meet the criteria of a good judge.
you're clearly in a developing stage as a sim-maker and i'm all for standing by your files. but you have to be able to acknowledge that there is LOTS of room for improvement (for all of us to be sure, but i mean to be good enough to get into this pack specifically).
the best words of advice i can give you are these:
-START PLAYING SPREAD. i cannot stress this enough. i don't know what your current spread experience is, but in order to fully grasp pattern usage and make files that truly flow you -have- to be able to at least competently play the style of your target medium. and, because the fundamentals of an important technical aspect of stepping are designed entirely for spread play, this leads me to my next point
-pay close attention to PiTcH ReLeVaNcY. you step metal songs. that's great. you don't want them to be super hard. thats ok too. now one of the only things that separate your files from the hordes of CoB and Dragonforce index-style dumps of 2004 is PR. you know the basics of this i am sure, but your charts are riddled with little missteps that completely throw off the file. practice makes perfect in this area of course (and i know there is no such thing as perfect PR, but you can get to a point where it feels as accurate as it can), but the only way to tell if it feels right is obviously to play spread.
also see the odi wiki page relating to PR, i am sure it's quite informative for advanced techniques to use when things just don't fit into 4 notesLast edited by gnr61; 03-23-2009, 12:39 PM.squirrel--it's whats for dinner.Comment
