This. Coming from my experience, I wish they shot my stuff (the little I had anyways...) in a video and vented through the whole world rather than the stupid, irrational parenting I went through when I was little. To me, it'll probably be less abusive.

But then again, it has turned me into something I wanted to be. Maybe.

      Re: Simply awesome!

many, many, many teens go on these occasional rants about their parents, and at least the ones who've done so to me are very healthy teens simply in a bad mood and want a place to vent. the best thing is to just let them.

posting it on facebook was pretty stupid, but there are much more understanding reactions available than shooting up a laptop. In a time like this, understanding is what you need. Expect more bs for the family down the road.

I don't really see any justification for what the father did.
but then again I'm sixteen so :l

The point is that the father's theatrics doesn't really solve anything and probably causes more harm than good.

If you really need to respond to typical teen outbursts by shooting up their laptop and posting a video to YouTube for millions to see for the sake of public humiliation... you've got serious issues.

Also this pretty much shows that he had no will to actually talk to his daughter about it in a reasonable manner and that he was afraid she would actually *gasp* realize that the parents aren't invincible infallible people after all!

My parents don't come to my laptop and destroy it to hinder my progress in school AND display it for public humiliation for being butthurt about me knowing that they are still prone to mistakes. My god.

but then again I'm sixteen so :l
Don't fall into these traps. Age has nothing to do with validity of statements:
          - Galen's law of ageism
          - Ageist fallacies
          - "You'll understand when you're older"

Another prominent example of bad parenting in the video is that he tried using the "age" argument instead of actually reasoning with his daughter.

You can understand something but not want it, and age is not synonymous with experience; for example, I learn about the body by studying the anatomy and physiology of it, not from age.

Sure, I may have more knowledge on certain subjects than when I was 14, but that's because I looked into them, not because I'm 3 years older.

The "you'll understand when you're older" statement is just a cop-out thing parents use when they don't want to explain their thoughts to their children, or if they can't find good arguments.

                    Re: Simply awesome!

right, it's synonymous with "you'll understand it once you experience it," which will be sometime when you're older. And by choosing "when you're older", it shows it will probably be quite awhile

knowing the difference between someone saying that to you in understanding and with personal reference, trying to help you, versus someone saying it to you out of derision or frustration seems like an obvious point. maturity and wisdom really do come with experience, and experience with time. and there's also an obvious difference between truly compassionate/wise people and people that are just as lost if not more lost than you are trying to keep up a charade. either way, i disagree with how matter of fact you are about ageism. you're just retaliating to being shat on all the time

Can't tell if trolling or not

You can still see/understand what someone is saying and find fallacies or disagree with it. That is the case that has been discussed for the past several pages.

Depends on context. Much of the time it's just an arbitrary excuse to avoid having to justify yourself, much like "Because I said so," etc.

EDIT: This is obviously different from using "You'll understand when you get older" in reference to empathizing with the severity of certain events or gauging subjective criteria. Some things won't be intuitive unless they experience it personally (i.e. what it's like to starve, or be poor, or lose a family member, or be cheated on, or go through heartbreak, or support oneself financially, or have kids, etc etc).

However, just because someone else may not be capable of empathizing fully doesn't make certain statements any less valid. For instance, if someone tells me that they're a good parent and I disagree with them for reason X, they might respond with "You won't understand until you're older and have kids of your own. It's not as easy as you're making it sound." They may be completely right. But it wouldn't change the fact that the criticism was still applicable/rationale/correct/justifiable/warranting introspection/whatever (e.g. if reason X were something like "You really shouldn't be hitting your kids when you're frustrated at them").

When my parents explain things to me, that is good parenting. Never did they mention age once in those discussions.

Then when they're yelling and saying "you'll understand when you're older", that's a completely different scenario and they just don't give a shit.

I think it's more along the lines of "you'll understand when you're a parent". Even then, you might have a different parenting approach. Everyone will raise their children different.

I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen before xD since I've been in the position of "bash my parents on facebook and they found out" and since I'm a parent, I understand both sides. But it was still hilarious xD
