Higher range laptop probably.
Good CPU is important, next is probably Graphics, then Ram.

Just get something generic with maybe an i5 and 4GB RAM. They're all the same.

EDIT: Also, requesting move to Bits & Bytes! I know that forum was made for coding/etc, but, a la fido, I think it should be expanded to encompass all PC related threads.

Alienware = overpriced dell. Mac? Seriously? -_-

Anyway, like others have been saying, get yourself an i5/i7, 2.4ghz or better. I don't have a lot of experience with AMD Phenom processors so I can't recommend those.

If you're writing code for games, you want good graphics. Otherwise an intel integrated chip or maybe a low-end (4250? 6210?) radeon will do.

Shoot for 4GB to 6GB for RAM.

I was gonna say go to the store or find a $500 laptop like your link shows. But those Asian OEMs are kind of questionable to me.

And like everyone else said, get one with an i5/i7 with maybe good graphics depending on your needs.

He has a high-end desktop that he could use for testing. If you're really doing in depth VG coding, you're not using your laptop.

If I needed something with firepower, I've always got the PC. I just need something portable I can code with that will be decently fast.

Yeah. Basically any generic notebook with an i5 or maybe even an i3 will do you fine.
