Is there such thing as CPU-intensive coding?

If not, any generic laptop should work fine. AMD Phenom II (X9## or P9##) or Intel i5-2540m (i3-2130 is also an option. i7 is probably unnecessary for simple web-browsing).

2gb of ram for the lols (You can always add more).

I don't really like Dell or HP. I would rather get something from Asus or Lenovo.

While in general ASUS and MSi make the best notebooks (IMO), they're generally very gaming oriented. I don't know if they have anything geared towards what he's looking for. They might, but I'm not sure. Your best bet for this is probably Lenovo or Toshiba.

TLDR: ASUS and MSi are fantastic, but might not have what you want. Toshiba and Lenovo are pretty much guaranteed to have a bunch of notebooks that are what you are looking for.

There are consumer-line products from ASUS and MSi that are pretty good.

Have no experience with Toshiba laptops, but they generally get positive reviews.

Lenovo... well, I have had bad experiences with them as my Thinkpad BSOD'ed multiple times, well into the double digits - it was just a disaster. RMA'ed and now on this MSi laptop. Lenovo is considered good by many people online, but honestly, I've witnessed on more than four occassions multiple Thinkpads just pooping out crashes and BSODing at random.

Edit: But for some reason you want to go for Lenovo, they're having a Black Friday sale with laptops over 50% off. Crazy deal if their laptops didn't suck.

I've gone through two Thinkpads in my lifetime. Never again. Those things break down pretty hard when they decide to go.

Then again, I played so much Stepmania/FFR on them, and that probably didn't help... >.>

Oh, I'll keep that in mind then. I'd always heard good things about Lenovo.

But yeah, ASUS/MSi are my first choices I think.

Re: good, fast laptop for coding / web surfing etc

Personally, I would steer clear of MSI. My friend bought an MSI laptop last year, the motherboard died in 12 days. He replaced it under warranty and got another just like it, and it died, same cause, in just a little over two months.

Dells are good machines for the money (so long as they aren't Alienware branded; the studio and inspiron lines are decently priced), but they tend to get hot, my laptop included. Yet, it's been running strong for 3+ years despite four or five shutdowns from overheat, so they're pretty durable.

ASUS is top quality stuff so get an ASUS if you can find one with the right hardware, but Acer and Toshiba aren't bad either.

...Motherboard died...? That must've been a rare case, especially if it happens twice.

I'd have to say that's probably a pretty rare thing. MSi makes some of the best motherboards around. They're the manufacturers of my personal favourite mobo.

Okay, maybe just don't buy a GT725, if they make those anymore, lol.

Either way, Dells are reliable. I haven't had any issues with them other than they use the cheapest materials possible in their computers.
