I think what you bought is overkill for what you wanna do.
I spent 330$ on my compaq this past march, dualcore something or other, old video card, 3 or 4 ram, standard 15.6 inches, and I've been nothing but happy. I play wow and lotro on it, although lotro settings have to be pretty low. Most annoying thing is that it seems to think it can play games at higher rez than it actually can. Oh, and that it has windows 7 and keeps randomly losing things in the Cloud.
Best things about it? Durable as ****. I drag this thing around with me a lot and it gets banged and bumped all the time, and I don't have a cushioned laptop bag. Battery lasts about 4hrs word processing. Never had a computer boot or load things so fast.
If it lasts me another 6 months, best money I ever spent on a computer.
Guess I shoulda read the thread earlier, oh well.

Extra $100 wouldn't be worth the marginal gains

Cba to read through, but it kinda depends a lot on what IDE you use for coding. Eclipse with plugins and so on really needs a good cpu and at least 4gig, preferrably 6 gig ram these days to run really smooth. It has gotten pretty bloated over the years. Haven't tried any recent Visual Studio, but I'm guessing that would be even more demanding.

If notepad++ and commandline coding, a used pentium laptop from 15 years ago will do, anything better is just a bonus.

TL;DR version; I would never use a netbook for any serious coding.

6 gigs of RAM for eclipse? ROFL

You can easily get by with 2 gigs of ram and a low-end dual core processor for web coding and web surfing. You really don't need anything modern at all really, but that's the basic luxury of today's cheaper desktops/laptops.

I name my electronics after Transformers -- so, names, go! Optimus and Megatron already taken.

"Oh, just my cock." Replied Foil.
"That just will not do." was keywii's response as she lunged for the scissors, pulled the blades apart, and clamped them down on the base of foil's shaft. Blood start gushing out of the wound where his penis used to be.
              "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Yelled Foil in horror.
"Don't worry. I'm a wizard" uttered Keywii. And with that, Foil's penis grew back.
