What number of players do you think this game is best with?
3-4. having 5-6 makes for longer games; like 6 is doable, but might be more enjoyable and go faster as actually 2 groups of 3
that said i don't own the physical game, so i don't know if it's one of the ones that you need to buy a player expansion for to add extra treasure/victory cards, if you're playing it in real life

yupp. the base game only has enough cards for a 4 person game. If you want to play 5-6 players, you need Intrigue (which has base cards included along with the expansion) or one of the stand alone base card sets

SADLY IT DOES NOT
Intrigue USED TO come with the base cards as well, and then the later reprintings don't. So you're stuck either HAVING to buy the base game to play any of them, or having to drop 15-20 bucks for a set of 'Base Cards Only' they just happen to also sell.

no wonder people call it an expansion rather than base+
at the very least, that seems like a cheaper price than what you'd pay for settlers stuff
oh sorry ;_; when I bought intrigue it had the base cards, the version I have has them
catan seems like the base game and seaside together is necessary, but maybe thats just me. seaside can mesh with some of the aspects of traders+barbarians but it really doesn't mesh that well with cities+knights.

No it used to, and it was very good that it did, but of course, they probably had a giant warehouse full of unsold base card sets and decided "Well maybe we can leave them out of Intrigue"
You don't need seafarers to do anything else, and the way seafarers is designed, I don't actually think you can "properly" combine it with anything besides maybe cities and knights.
Traders and Barbarians already has all the sea stuff needed to extend out to the two new islands. Trying to add in seafarers to it would like, have to extend the opposite way to islands which could be cool but would take forever because you'd need to play to like 25 points.
yuuup catan is obnoxious and i refuse to give them more money for pricing their game out that way
Which way, that there's a base game and then expansions? Most games with expansions do that.
The thing that most people find aggravating about Catan is the "It plays with 3-4 players only and if you want more you have to buy the 5-6 player expansion" but their response to that is that pacakging it all into a 3-6 player game would make the game more expensive for the groups of 3 and 4 so your mileage may vary on whether that's actually preferable.
art, having a heck of a time looking up the name though because the original image doesn't have it

yeah, but adding on to it is i think the game and its expansions are already pricey
if i priced it out i feel like you could buy several other entire games for the same amount of money you'd be spending on catan stuff
e: actually i do have some prices in my head, i could buy my way back into M:tG standard for cheaper
