I don't expect most people to decide that "internet piracy" is clearly right or wrong as a broad umbrella for a class of behaviors, and would hope instead that they made that decision based on each action they engaged in that fell in that category. I see that as the realistic way of making those decisions.

I feel like there's really no way to support some forms of piracy but not others that isn't just rationalizing to have the things you want and condemn the things you didn't want anyway.

I think Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and Steam proved something very useful: If you make things fairly-priced, easily accessible, and devoid of security bullshit -- people will pay for it. But if you start loading up on DRM (which only hurts honest customers), pricing things sky-high, or making things a pain in the ass to install, then it's much easier to just pirate the thing.

Of course, pirate networks are less reliable, cracked versions of shit can be lower-quality, or if it's a game, buggy -- and there are of course the legal risks. But this is why having an easy, official channel is such an important step against piracy.

Is piracy stealing? It both is, and isn't. Is Adobe losing money from my pirating Photoshop? No, because I wouldn't pay the absurd price tag even if I weren't able to pirate it. I'd just settle for GIMP or something. But honestly, if you want people to pirate something, you want them to pirate YOUR shit. If you've got high circulation, that's a very good thing.

However, if you pirate something (or get something for free) that you would have spent money on otherwise, then it is an opportunity cost and does hurt the company.

And that is probably bordering on a blanket overextension of your impressions based on your biases. There likely exists people who pirate but aren't shitty about it even if you can't imagine a persona that fits that profile because you are a producer of content who empathizes with content producers.

tangentially the endowment effect in conjunction with piracy is interesting because i enjoy stuff more when i buy it than when i torrent a bunch of it. almost universally i like the stuff i buy more than the stuff i download out of boredom. something about seeking it out specifically, choosing it among multiple spending options, and then feeling that i must get my value out of it.

probably similar to why this part of me wants to do vinyl for music because some chunk of my caveman brain likes the idea of wandering into a special cave filled with colorful sleeves around black discs and finding that special artefact and then returning to my own cave to engage in the magic of antiquity. not quite the same experience with iTunes or bandcamp. i never do get into vinyl because i look at the effort involved and balk, but i have the fleeting appeal towards the concept. like i do eating salad and organizing my storage.
