legit questionn

A forum infraction happens when you break some sort of forum rule. Rather than simply slapping you with an immediate (and potentially unfair) ban, you receive an infraction warning stating what you did wrong. If it continues, you'll receive a point value based off of what you did wrong, and a certain number of points nets you a ban (with a more severe/higher point value meaning a longer ban).

The points also have a period of which they don't expire (think of it like a probationary period), where a minor penalty will build on the previous one and give you a ban equal to or potentially longer than the first one.

For the record NetJet!'s isn't even real and was them testing the thing when they first put it up. He didn't actually get 40 points or he wouldn't be here. Syhto's has an explanation for it and was sent to her when it was given.

Is 40 considered a lot? In a legitimate case, how long of a ban would that get someone?

You're looking at over a year with that many (if it were in 1 shot like NetJet showed). Most infractions wont be more than a few points (1 - 3 points) at a time and it also depends if the points are accumulated over time or if they're in one shot. Also a lot of times they're just warnings for 0 points.

Net's at the time was a permanent ban. I was testing how the system worked when I gave it to him.
