I'd be in if there was a pool of songs and I knew that I wouldn't be forced to chart some shit song I don't like that the person who decides songs really wants charted or something.

tbh it should be only unique songs, whats the point of making 80 charts for the same song lol

mfw you say this when the host of the event is a competent stepartist with numerous charts in game, and literally is married to someone who has a near 100% success rate with chart acceptance since the site's return, lmfao

as far as the other point: a pool of songs leads to a situation where competent stepartists choose from a not necessarily level playfield in terms of songs (four of the top five of the previous StepCon were the same Venetian Snares song, My Love is a Bulldozer)

note that this isn't necessarily a criticism of the songs themselves as all three songs were pretty good; however, most of the proficient stepartists knew that they had the most opportunity to be a bit more deviated with a Venetian Snares song than they did other things.

one song keeps the playfield as level as possible.

Part of the point always was to also push people out of their comfort zones with songs as well.

i'm sorry i came off as rude, I still feel though that a similar type of event could exist where there was a larger pool of songs, my entire desire is that new songs that don't have charts are created, me just saying "lol its what i want stepped xD" was sorta a joke but based on the description of the event its something i sorta assumed lol

I'm sure songs will get made that are drastically different skillsets etc but idk i'd rather just have more songs charted in general lol... I also didn't really realize this was an existing thing (stepcon), cause idk I can't think of any that have happened in the past few years, but I might have just missed them

This was an event we started on Dragon's Fury during the site downtime then brought here. There hasn't been a lot but they've been done.

"Every step any song they want, and then we'll decide whose song was best" is called "The Forum Awards Best Stepfile Category" and we do that every year.

The whole idea is "Lets see everybody's version of X to compare them" which is really cool.

My question is, though I think I know the answer, if people are being split into categories will they be

"Categories based on known experience as steppers"
or
"Categories based on the probable difficulty range of their submission"

Because I could see both ways, like give everybody the song and then 1 day to pick whether they want to do a "light" or "standard" or "heavy" version and sort that way, versus sorting the people with 50+ songs in game versus the ones who've never submitted.

Or will it just be random?

The songs available for stepping will be selected based on their steppability from The Conet Project's Recordings of Shortwave Number Stations music album.
