"Every step any song they want, and then we'll decide whose song was best" is called "The Forum Awards Best Stepfile Category" and we do that every year.

The whole idea is "Lets see everybody's version of X to compare them" which is really cool.

My question is, though I think I know the answer, if people are being split into categories will they be

"Categories based on known experience as steppers"
or
"Categories based on the probable difficulty range of their submission"

Because I could see both ways, like give everybody the song and then 1 day to pick whether they want to do a "light" or "standard" or "heavy" version and sort that way, versus sorting the people with 50+ songs in game versus the ones who've never submitted.

Or will it just be random?

It's always been random when AJ and I host, though I do tend to put more prolific artists together where possible.

it tends to be the higher in strength the simfile artist group the more obscure it gets rofl

I think there's nothing more exciting when stepping than to have 10 people who you respect as stepartists do the same song you do, the way other people handle certain dynamics in the song is fascinating. I really really enjoyed the second stepcon for that reason. One of the best experiences I had on this website. Even though I only made it to the second round I learned a ton back then.

I don't do rounds for stepcon, I'm surprised it was done that way in the last.

It's just a matter of making it feel like a tournament or not. Multiple rounds would require much more prep for files and whatnot. I'm happy with 1 round

you're making a terrible implication that every single person is going to "step the same file" 20 times, when everyone approaches files in a different way.

just because the chart has to be done "multiple times" as a result of a competition (notwithstanding the fact that it's being done once, per person) doesn't mean that everyone who is participating is not doing anything to "express themselves creatively." ilikexd's chart for Unpause The Heat was a contest submission in the past and he took a different approach than just about everyone for the round in his structure, on top of producing an interesting color-gimmick for the Mario-fireball sounds in the song (he was the only one who did it). so clearly, expression's not an issue here.

if you don't like the idea of the event, that's all good; however, your criticisms are completely invalid (do you even plan on actually giving this a serious attempt as it stands anyway?)

well i chart files and i would very well be willing to chart a song for this but not if i cant choose it, i cant chart songs i dont like
