This sums it up pretty well for me too. I'd like to add, however, that it gets progressively more frustrating to do each time given the communities lack of appreciation and respect. It's gotten to the point where I've thrown detailed notes out the window. I used to even offer to re-judge a file; I'm not above admitting I'm wrong when I am or having judged a file with a poor mental state and that attributing to a bad score, but if nobody's going to respect me enough to make an approach in a way that doesn't cause a commotion than I don't have time to deal with it.

When I judged in the old style, we discussed a lot of the ratings with each other. I think it's better for the stepartists that way, because if for example I didn't get a file and thought it was pretty crappy, but blu saw how brilliant it was, he could show me the good stuff and make my opinion better . Yeah it can change your ratings, but in almost all cases it made the judgment better, as well as making it consistent betwee nthe judges (which makes it easier for the stepartist to take suggestions and improve the overall product). I think that's also a positive of having a Tass-like position where somebody takes everybody's opinion into consideration and gives an overall judgment.

        Judging's tough.

            people say elitism is bad

but remember how awesome it felt to get your file accepted back when judges were anal about everything?

            quality control mang

I'm not saying everything about it was great, but now that people are really good at making simfiles, I don't think qc should be toned down. Rather, I think even better files can be put in game. People shouldn't complain about judgment they get; we have seen hundreds of files and usually know what we're talking about. Likewise, judges should take many things in consideration when judging a file, not just how "technically correct" it is.

gah I can't even describe it with this dumb english language

"Generally if a file is good, most judges should see eye to eye."

in practice, this is not true
most files that are good are good because they do something novel - and by definition that means you're going to get a mixed judgement. if it WAS true we'd only need one judge to look at each file!

the converse - if a file is bad, judges will see it's shit - is true however

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submissions CLOSED)

Earlier someone mentioned that "no one gets paid for this" is a stupid excuse. That's absolute bullshit because honestly, you can't expect people to perform a job without any encouragement (payment, appreciation or whatever floats your boat and motivates you). It's good that people do volunteer but if there's a lack of encouragement to do the work, it's definitely not the judge's fault, but due to a lack of motivating factors. Why else would you do a job?

That aside, the judging process shouldn't be so secluded. At least, not later on. Discussion is healthy and you don't see top judges for artistic talent (be it singing, dancing, art or whatever you can think of) just going to their secluded little island and make their own opinion. They discuss with each other. Yes judges can be convinced by other judges, but is that a bad thing? Convincing others happens when someone makes a rational and logical argument, and shouldn't be shut off from the others. It's a test of your logic, and if your logic stands you have nothing to worry about. If it doesn't stand, it's a learning moment for that judge, and he or she should revise his opinion.

Also, I'd like to give myself up for judge for the next batch. I think it'd be a good to have some new insights and I'm willing to make some time for judging. I'm not very known for my judging and I've been mostly in the background when it comes to judging (and simfiling in general really), but people who know me and have asked me to judge their work can vouch for my reviews.

I'd love to judge tbh even if it was only as a back up

but to be completely honest I doubt it would ever happen.

I also can't say I'd blame them either.

because you enjoy it? why is everything about getting satisfaction from others towards what you do? do a job because with the motivation of saying that it's a finished job when you finish, and earn the satisfaction of finishing a job that you said you would do. I don't care if people don't appreciate the work that I do for free, but I do care that the job gets done so that others will see the benefits of it. That's two entirely different things.

Do it because you want to AND because you possess the skills to, not because you need to. Sorry, but I fail to see how it's a stupid excuse and never will. In the case of the batch, there are people that are waiting for the notes and will undoubtedly be thankful to see them, so yeah, there's something to do the notes for every single time that they are volunteering.

EDIT: +1 to you at least starting as a backup judge, wouldn't mind it personally

both have been around for a while, made some great files, and generally know what they're talking about.
