having the charts stepped accurately to the music has always been a staple of ffr. I didn’t spend hours and hours slowing down the music to try and make out minute sounds, make sure jumps are stepped to the correct sounds, make sure all the layering is accurate and consistent, just for that to get all thrown out of the window with dumps being accepted.

late as fuck post, and not meaning to call anyone out but, I think there could be a really interesting conversation between you and Gradiant.

the question is more about how prepared the current judge team is to assess that.

I can safely say for myself I have a huge bias on what makes a good dump chart vs what makes a bad chart so I am very much unprepared myself to hand out judgment on dump files. Therefore, I will probably not be judging many dump files at all (At least, I am well aware of that bias, and don't wish to impede files in the system because of it).

On the topic of whether judges are ready for it or not, I don't think they would open a special batch for it unless they had a modicum of readiness and confidence in judging it.

I stepped the TV static very accurately to the music. that part took me hours. ffr is the only 'true' 4k rhythm game left because it actually steps accurately to the music, and it makes ffr unique.

I think a counter-argument can be made in the light of Wiosna's recent SotW post that delves into how dumps getting accepted into FFR has been a long-time movement since the inception of Vantablack & Naruto's Ninja Way being put in-game. Ghost notes have been slowly added and sprinkled into bass wobbles for emphasis over multiple charts to make said songs more interesting. Which has led into ghost notes for music layering, then structure, and eventually dump files.

I mean, I really don't mind the breakcore files. I might not want to sit down and listen to VS all night, but to me a good breakcore file is just as appealing as a good dump file.

a good chart is a good chart, regardless of the philosophy behind the stepping. There is something to be said about how song choice can affect a player's enjoyment based on their music preferences, but theres an audience for pretty much any type of file as long as diligence and effort is put into its creation.

You're just drawing an arbitrary line in the sand based on your own preferences and imposing it onto others- if you don't like dumps, dont play them. nobody is forcing you to play content you don't personally enjoy.

FFR has for years prided itself on having high-quality files; charting was down to an artform, and it actually took skill to make a good chart. this is also probably demotivating for the stepartists who put so much effort making their chart perfect all this time. it’s like it was pointless and it’s like, why continue to put in effort anymore into charts, or chart at all?

allowing dumps is a huge step in the wrong direction.

You keep assuming like these charts won't be judged to the same quality standards as regular charts. If anything, these will likely be more closely scrutinized for quality and consistency as they will be the first official ones.
