Well the problem is that relatively speaking, high performance will always be pricy, and the price differential between standard hard drives and solid states is not changing much with respect to Moore's Law.

In other words, I could buy a "cheap" internal solid state today for ~$100 or so but I'd only get like 8 GB out of it. Or I could spend that $100 on a standard hard drive and get over a terabyte. A few years from now, the amount of room I can buy with $100 in terms of standard drives will still feel that much better than however much I can buy with $100 in terms of solid states.

In other words, while solid states may be 10-20 times faster, they'll also cost 10-20 times more and that relationship hasn't been changing for a while.

The only way it'd be worth it right now is to do what DS said and use a SSD for your OS and maybe some high-demand games. But in a year I can probably just buy new hardware and kill off that bottleneck anyway. Sometimes I both love and hate how fast tech growth is.

Ah but you can have the best of both worlds here. BUY BOTH.

Again I'm the minority here, I have an actual need for this sort of speed, especially when rendering stuff out of AfterEffects since it has to try and write frames as fast as they're rendered. Standard drives can't keep up. I do make enough with my job/freelancing to be able to stay on top of the technology curve, and actually have to if I want to keep up with the 3d industry.

Just loading games onto an SSD wouldn't justify it, so I can see where people would be weary.

This video... Makes me really angry for one reason. Super fast defrag? Wow. One of the selling points of SSD's is that they do not fragment, AND defragging an SSD actually speeds up deterioration of the flash. God damn.

"That just will not do." was keywii's response as she lunged for the scissors, pulled the blades apart, and clamped them down on the base of foil's shaft. Blood start gushing out of the wound where his penis used to be.
        "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Yelled Foil in horror.
"Don't worry. I'm a wizard" uttered Keywii. And with that, Foil's penis grew back.

Yeah that video always pissed me off for the exact same reason. I was all "Defragging a SSD? Uhhhhh..."

It's like saying "Look at how easy it is to clean the horse poop out of your car engine!"

What bothers me is that hard drive speeds are regularly the bottlenecks nowadays compared to things like processor/video speed. I fear that if I got one solid state drive, I wouldn't be able to help myself and I'd end up blowing 5 grand within a week. One of my biggest flaws is impatience, and so my propensity for overpowered, adrenaline-rushed, gratuitous performance needs to be kept in check somewhere.

On the other hand, what the hell else am I going to spend money on?

Do you really have 5TB of programs? Keeping files like pictures and videos on an SSD isn't going to really make a difference. If you just get enough to put your OS on alone you'll see such an amazing speed increase. I'd buy it for that reason alone but it can also greatly improve the performance of whatever else you can put on there. Don't get too anal about having to have the best computer. I deal with computers all day and play all games up to date and I'm running a 2.4GHz processor, 2GB DDR2 RAM, and a new 480GTX but I was running on a 9800GT for a while. It's not worth the money to buy top of the line, it's best to buy reasonable parts and you'll get the most bang for your buck even though you'll have to upgrade your PC earlier.

                Re: Terabyte Owners

I don't (right now I have under 1 TB of games) but if I were to go crazy and load up on everything I wanted, I'd easily hit 5 TB without thinking about it.

Right now I'm still running the same rig I bought about a year and a half ago -- Intel i7 920 with a GTX 295 and 12 GB RAM. It seems to run everything pretty darn well, even today, but I love having a system so gratuitously powerful that there's simply no chance of a stutter or hiccup anywhere.

Processor hasn't been a bottleneck for a while (a lot of the extra cycles just go to waste atm) -- it's been the hard drive. I figure a solid state is great for the OS, but I haven't done enough research to see what it'd be like to have a drive dedicated to the OS alone and then use other drives for games and apps.

I want to build an entirely new rig in the future anyway. I know it's not cost-effective, but I *love* having top of the line computers. The extra utility makes it worthwhile imo. Still debating whether to go air or water cooled. My main reason for that debate isn't so much performance but DUST. I hate how dusty air-cooled machines get.

                  Re: Terabyte Owners

The biggest issue I ran into when I only had a single 64gb SSD, was that it runs out of room far faster than you want it to. Even if you just load the OS and nothing else, Windows7 takes up around 27gb, and on top of that all of the caching (the temp folder needs to be cleared out pretty often if you have a small SSD). So I say 64gb is the bare minimum size anyone should go to unless they're for some strange reason loading windows xp onto it...then I would think a 32gb drive would do fine. Also, if your mobo has USB 3.0 ports on it, SSD's are far more useful in data transfers (to flash drive etc), that is where you REALLY see a massive performance gain.
