It's pretty easy to **** up a Windows OS cause it practically ****s up itself. I find for whatever reason the registry just gets all gunked up with god knows what then your programs become unresponsive sometimes and the only way to get things back in perfect condition is to reinstall Windows. I've used this partition for only gaming, but quite often I'll use it for anything else cause I don't feel like rebooting my computer. This install was done last summer and I'm starting to see the beginnings of these problems. I don't use an Anti-Virus but I honestly shouldn't have to, and I'm fine with just reinstalling, but it's sad if a part of Windows security policy is to get recognized 3rd party anti-virus software. Their phones are worse with viruses, it's hilarious how terrible Microsoft is with security.

I will never buy a mac because I'm not hipster enough. I'm not paying thousands of dollars to get a computer I have no idea how to use just because it's cool. The world runs on PC and there are too many well you have to do this in order for it to work for a Mac. No thanks.
The weight of what I say depends on how you feel.

I can name 3 things I've had to disable, two of which are considered "features" and are by far the most annoying things I've ever had to deal with. (Those two features namely being the auto-snap and drag-to-top to maximize. I don't even know the name of the second, but **** was it annoying. If I wanted to maximize it why even bother dragging it to the top? Just double click - wallah. Maximized. Redundant feature much? Yea, I realize it only maximizes when the mouse hits the edge - still annoying to have it happen ever. If I want to split my screen up I'll organize it myself. **** auto snap.

I'm shocked Windows manages to stop continually ****ing up their software and that W7 manages to run decent on 1GB of RAM, unlike Vista.... haha.

XP still outperforms both, that's the saddest part.

I enjoy the autosnap feature. Just fling two windows to the sides of the screen and BAM. Especially great on large monitors (mine is 24"), but even on my 15" laptop it's helpful.

Also, maybe it's just my bad luck, but I've used 3 XP machines in the past and all of them ran like a corpse being dragged through mud after about 6 months, possibly having something to do with what fido said about the registry becoming unstable after a while. However, I have never had those problems with Windows 7, and I've been running it for a little over a year.

You've got to be kidding me -- Vista/W7 have been so much more stable for me than XP has. I've *rarely* endured crashes over the past year and a half, and that's saying something.

Like, what are you doing? Downloading and installing everything every ad has ever told you to?
I'm taking stuff in school. The registry gets bigger and bigger with pretty much everything you do and all of this has to be loaded when the computer starts up. It's mapped in some super complicated way all over the hardrive so they can protect they way they did it (so it's like a super fragmented file), and it's stupid and cryptic. Over time no matter what you do this gets all ****ed up. I honestly don't like using registry cleaners and I shouldn't have to use them cause an OS should be able to keep itself stable. I haven't run into a single person including all the people in my program who don't run into stupid problems about half a year of heavy use into it.

Same exact programs, albeit updated over the years (EG: Firefox 2 --> Firefox 3.6.12). Nothing different with how I've treated my systems in over 9 years.

Yet regardless, I had countless more issues on the piece of crap that is Vista. W7 has had a few here and there but I can't even compare it to Vista. It still has far more than XP ever had.

I crash far more often then I ever should, and this isn't just on one machine. This is on three separate machines. My laptop, my desktop, and my work computer. Actually, I upgraded my desktop back to XP and once I buy another external I plan to do the same for my laptop. Work computer I don't have a choice for.

Until Windows decides to rewrite their OS, you'll have this issue. I never really had an issue with this outside of Vista. Then again, except for people who enjoy riding Microsoft's cock - I've yet to see anyone say they actually enjoyed their "Vista experience".

Also I constantly am running 4-5 programs and never need two of them visible at any time. I'm perfectly fine with alt+tabbing my way through things as I have for years. I like to move stuff off screen for a bit, auto-snap decides instead that it should take up half my screen because I moved my mouse just that much further than I should have.

I personally don't have problems with auto-snap. But if you don't like it, this might help:

Go to Control Panel.
Click on Ease of Access link or Ease of Access Center icon.
Select Change how your mouse works or Make the mouse easier to use option.
Tick the check box for Prevent Windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen with the mouse under “Make it easier to manage windows” section.

Re: "Why should I never buy a Mac?"

The advantage and disadvantage of owning a mac is the same: they tightly control all aspects of their product. What you get is quality control and a piece of hardware that has a whole spectrum of software designed specifically for its make. On the other hand, it is quite restrictive and you certainly pay an exorbitant price tag.

I owned a boutique PC company for two years, so this is all old hat to me. I've long been tired of the "Mac Myth", the idea that Apple's components are exclusive or different than what is available on the PC market. The OS is simply a highly proprietary distro of an open source OS, the hardware is PC hardware marked up to hell, and many unnecessary restrictions arise from Apple's love of controlling its products' usage.

So, my music production rig is a PC I built, and my DJ rig is paired with PC laptop. However, I bought an 11" MacBook Air with a 128gb SSD, a dual core 1.6GHz dual core processor and 4gb ram. I also purchased a 1TB 7200RPM HDD from WD, and together these things have been an absolute lifesaver in traveling to India. The shell is carved from a single block of aluminum, the keys have a great feel to them, it's incredibly compact, the trackpad is a joy to work with, and the magnetic snap-on charger is a nice touch. This is not something I could have built on my own (without manufactory resources at my disposal and a ridiculous amount of research, development, and materials), and to me it is well-worth the price.

Furthermore, though I find that though the Mac line is quite expensive, it tends to do quite well for dummies who are too computer-illiterate to manage their own computers properly. That's an entirely different market than the one that's likely to build their own computer. Apple is a strong, recognizable brand name with easy-to-reach stores and plenty of support tech to hold the computer dummy's hand. You'll find that recognition of brand and support can be quite important, and it is the fault of the PC market that they have not found a way to lay some better ground rules. **** HP, **** Dell, **** Gateway, and **** all the garbage PC manufacturers. This is in fact what turned me on to building my own stuff: the fact that the market is flooded with crap from manufacturers that use ****ty parts and comes pre-loaded with a bunch of advertisements and garbage software (remember when Sony wanted you to pay a fee of $50 to remove the pre-loaded crap from their laptops? the only reason that's gone is people got pissed and told them to go die in a fire).

So the moral of the story is, there is a market for every product, and this whole stupid "MAK SUKS LOL" or "IT JUST WERKS FUK PEESEE" war is absolutely ridiculous. Saying that Mac parts are expensive and proprietary is simply stating the obvious.

Oh and few other points: if you spend half an hour after you build a PC, you can download all the tools you'll need to keep it running well for free, and you can set them up to work automatically. Another mac difference: they control everything, and so many pieces of software aren't allowed to make the same level of changes that the PC programs do. I can't tell you how many times an improperly coded program (by a major company, widely distributed) has ****ed up my registry. Add that to the SecuROM **** that all the PC game companies are slipping into their products and you have a nightmare. It's like a damned rootkit! oh, and let's not forget monitoring programs like Norton which work and function like a virus you pay for.

Ah, another thing.. PC manufacturers do the same thing with their components. "How awesome is this? 4gb ram for REEL CHEEP!" though they don't tell you that the 4gb isn't some nice 4gb DDR3 1800Mhz with 7-8-7-20 timings, but is rather a turd DDR2 module pair with loose timings. When you buy parts on your own, they're usually OCable or at least with better stock timings. PC manufacturers usually use the bottom-of-the-line parts because they know you won't know any better. And as for the high-end Dells and Gateways, they suck curdled goat sperm.

So, in conclusion, build one yourself if you can. If not, look for the manufacturer with the most consistency in their products, quality parts, and a whole host of other products designed with the same system in mind. Apple, though at a high price, is one of several companies that fulfills that requirement.

Maybe instead of bitching about the cost, understand that there is indeed a valid reason to purchase these products, though for your purposes, it's not worth the cost. Educate people with objective comparisons hardware/software wise, and let them get what THEY want, not what you THINK they should have.

/thread even MORE over

edit: wait wait wait, I've got to trash your crappy rig before I leave: You spent half the cost of the system on a SSD? As a gamer, your video card will be one of the most important components, yet you got a 5750, though decided that a 650w PSU was necessary. Pfft. And your HDD is Caviar Green, so prolly 5700RPM. Lame as ****. The Coolermaster HAF is a great case, though, I will give you that. Your choice of RAM is also crap. Better to get a higher frequency RAM and a better mobo with some of that spare cash you saved from not buying that ungodly SSD (which don't remotely make sense in a rig that cheap).

without looking, I'd say get another 5750 (as a cheap solution) for crossfire, drop the SSD and opt for a 7200RPM 32mb cache HDD for $99 (these days you can get a 1.5tb or more for that price if you know where to look), swap the PSU for an 80-plus certified Corsair PSU, swap the ram for an overclockable kit with better timings and higher frequency, change the mobo for a mobo that's not MicroATX as you'll have more connections and a better chipset (MicroATX for a mid-tower case? for ****ing what?), and consider purchasing a better fan than the stock fan that comes with the processor. comes in handy for OCing and getting more for your dollar.

You forgot one last thing: you didn't include a copy of Windows, which is another $99 for Home Premium 7, unless you're planning on running Ubuntu or some ghetto ****. You'd also probably like to have a disk drive, unless you're living in the 80's. That will set you back another 20-30 generally.

This **** is basic, and a good example of why you might want to revise some of your statements. Learn to build before you whine. Here I was thinking I was talking to somebody who knew what they were talking about. My mistake.
