Re: So, windows 7 came out
Since stepmania was never submitted to the Debian repository (Only program I use that isn't), you download the Linux version from their website, extract it from the .tar.gz (like a .zip), then open the folder and double click on StepMania. About just as hard as Windows.
EDIT: It's probably done like this because it's easier to access the StepMania folder and it doesn't have to run from where it's installed, so possibly +1 Linux.Comment

Re: So, windows 7 came out
Has anyone had the chance to play ffr in Windows XP mode in Windows 7? Something is telling me that it might run like it does in XP, which would be amazing.
This only applies to people who still get vista lag on ffr in win7 (ie me, or at least in a virtual machine).Comment

Re: So, windows 7 came out
The learning curve on Linux is fairly steep (a newbie will have no idea what a distro is or a repository or know how to work the command line or even what a binary or compilation is, etc) compared to Windows, even though both tend to work right out of the box. My point is that anything "cool" that you can do in Linux, I can also do in Windows. It really comes down to user preference, and, at the end of the day, Windows wins in general compatibility and presence.
I've almost never had any problems in Windows because I'm not retarded. Almost everyone who has corrupted their **** on Windows that I know were also the types to misconfigure things or install a bunch of **** that opens the doors for spyware and slow processing. The ONLY downside to Windows is that I do have to run virus scanners more often, but other than that, I can outperform any Mac or Linux user.Comment

this thread
anyways, anyone (Izzy?) wanna PM a solid pirated version of Windows 7? Even if it's not so solid I'd still be willing to download it and try it. Mainly 'cause my friends computer just crashed. I have no idea wtf happened and he's 140 miles away so I can't baby him through a repair process. He requested a restoration CD (he wants my Vista disk) but i think I'm gonna make him my guinea pig for Windows 7 >:3
Says he can't boot in Safe Mode, or even get to the BIOS so its basically a fukked comp unless I tell him how to use Super Grub or some other program, and I don't feel like coaching him through something like that. All public 1-7's AAA'd.

Windows version of stepmania is a portable application. It doesn't write to the registry so you can also open it from any spot on your computer.
Also if you give me a PM I can give you an activator for Win7 and a place to find some links to a download if you don't have a friend with a CD or an iso. There isn't really any good places to link for downloads to it because megaupload, rapidshare and any other major hosting site is going to be constantly deleting such things. Torrents might do the trick though. The install iso isn't the illegal part though. So it isn't hard to just use a friends disc to do an install and then use an activator for the key part.Comment

Re: So, windows 7 came out
Oh great now we're on pink furries.
Some distros. I found Ubuntu to be about as difficult as breathing, but Gentoo had me crying under my bed after an hour or two.
On a related note, ****ing Macs. ****ING MACS. I've been trying to stick both the RC and W7 Pro from MSDNAA onto this MacBookPro. Great, right? It just worked. Except it didn't, and won't, and now I'm stuck with a ****ty OS and can't play Touhou in the middle of Cultural Studies.
Just in case someone knows what's wrong, the exact problem is that Boot Camp won't recognize a W7 installation disc. It just won't. I've tried several copies of both versions and even a bootable USB stick when I got desperate. But wait, Boot Camp doesn't support USB yet. :<

Re: So, windows 7 came out
Even Gentoo's installer is a pain in the ass. Gentoo is NOT for beginners. I don't even know who would prefer Gentoo.
I also hated Debian and Mandrake/Mandriva. SUSE is especially bloated and probably my least favorite distro. Even the simplest of tasks were just near-impossible and convoluted. Ubuntu is really the only distro I use.
I'm okay with Macs... I don't hate them, but I don't love them. My school had a mix of both PC's and Macs, and all I can really say is that Macs are pretty. It always took me longer to log into Windows than it did for me to get cranking on a Mac, but I had so much more control with Windows. Furthermore, when it comes to setting up PC's versus Macs for wireless/ethernet capabilities, PC's win hands down. Macs will give you so many bull**** errors and require you to go to such weird workarounds -- PC's are fairly straightforward and algorithmic. Setting up a Mac is more an art than a science.Last edited by MrRubix; 10-27-2009, 02:08 AM.Comment
