Re: Swearing
Why should people want their swearing to make a great impact on other people?~ 2nd Official FFR Gamewhore

Re: Swearing
The reason being they want attention. This may sound like a bad thing, but everyone wants attention in one point of time. Cursing is just a frequently used excuse for getting it.
In my context, I am implying the use of constant, repetitive cursing... Not cursing in general. That would be also a response to the OP.Sign here

Re: Swearing
Swearing is actually incredibly cool. I'm a language nerd, so it's not that I don't know a hundred other words that mean basically the same thing, it's that of those hundred, none of them mean exactly the same thing. The demonization of certain words is really interesting, because it gives them the special status of having no synonyms.
Think about it. Literally, poop and shit have the same meaning, but saying one in a moment of particular passion is infinitely more satisfying than the other. That's why swearing is cool, because it has an added meaning that isn't listed in the dictionary, a meaning that is more significant than the actual definition of the word. What's cool is that these words have somehow developed this meaning, and a common use that doesn't follow any of our accepted grammatical rules at all.

The thing is that some people obsessively use those words. They don't even make sense half the time they use them at times.Swearing is actually incredibly cool. They might use a verb as a noun that wasn't meant to be used as a noun, or something of that sort. It's not the use of the word, but the action of abusing it.Sign here

Re: Swearing
That's what's so goddamn cool about them. The common, accepted usage has absolutely nothing to do with the type of word it is. You can bitch and moan about "abuse" this and "obsessively use" that, but who defines what abuse of a word is? Who's to say what overuse of a word is? It's just language developing. It's what separates english from latin.Comment

Re: Swearing
While I agree that swear words are incredibly versatile, that is in fact what the problem of such words. They have so many meanings that it gives people a sense of security when they don't know how to describe a situation. It shows someone's ignorance out-right when they swear excessively. That's what's so goddamn cool about them. The common, accepted usage has absolutely nothing to do with the type of word it is.
