Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
1. How full is the mug?
2. How did you get a mug on a stick agenst the ceiling in real life?
3. Are the flames taking up all of the floor space excluding your standing area?Comment

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
any possibility of the flames sucking the oxygen out of the top of the room... so then it creates a vacuum buildup in the cup so that the cup can suction to the ceiling?
also, all discussions seem to focus on the cup. not on the matter of getting past the fires, which as rubix has said twice now... you can't simply just walk through.
so, assuming the suction could work to suck the cup to the ceiling, possibly swing the pole in front of you, creating bursts of air that would move the fire. might put out a few of the fires such that you could create a path to walk to the window.RIPComment

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
I edited the first post to explain how full it is. In other words, it's basically full, but not full enough so that you'd be automatically plastering gasoline on the ceiling no matter what.
And, in real life, my roommate stood on a chair and held the cup to the ceiling while I held it up from the bottom, and then he moved away. The pole I used was a sturdy cardboard tube.
BTW, I was able to figure it out in real-time. I had a bunch of paper on the ground to verify that I didn't spill any water.
Tass: Probably not, since there's an open window. Besides, you'd probably die or weaken first from the lack of oxygen even if that happened.
Edited the post to make some other clarifications. The fires are not going to die by themselves, and there is no wind.Last edited by MrRubix; 11-15-2008, 05:17 PM.Comment

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
I belive I have just figured it out. You let the cup fall in the direction of the window. Gravity will keep the cup on the stick (or in my case the butt end of a sword). When the stick is at 50 degrees from vertical you push the cup out of the window. I just did it. I can show you the whole model in vidchat if needed.
Then you could use your pole to vault over the flames and toward the un-locked door

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
My first assumption was similar to Tasselfoot's, since fire uses oxygen, there is a possibility the mug could be sucked on the ceiling. You're in a building, and there is nobody around to help or hear you. By a very unfortunate turn of events, you find yourself in a room surrounded by a series of incredibly packed, small, controlled flames. You're holding a pole (say an inch in diameter), which is currently pressed up against a cup (just an ordinary mug, let's say) of gasoline, which is pressed up against the ceiling. The cup is filled up until a sixteenth of an inch below the very top. If *any* gasoline touches any of the flames around you, it will cause a massive chain explosion. The controlled fires will not die out naturally. There is an open window about 12 feet to your left, and there will never be any wind coming in. You are 6 feet tall with average proportions. The ceiling is 15 feet high. The pole is 10 feet long. You may make any other reasonable assumptions. How do you avoid getting killed by this explosion (you can't simply stay there forever... you will eventually faint/pass out/lose strength/etc)?
Fire needs oxygen to survive, and the window is open, leading to an oxygen source. 6 Feet Tall with average proportions gives a arm-length of I'd say 2.5 feet. this gives me 0.5 feet extra if I were to use the pole to close the window.
also, There is probably a door in the room, because I probably didn't come in through the window and I wasn't forced in here.
The question asks "How do you avoid getting killed by this explosion?" meaning there will be gasoline falling into the fire.
So in the case of an explosion, the best thing to do would be to push the cup as far away as I can from me so the explosion isn't in my area which is the only place without a fire. Gasoline should only intensify the fire in that specific region, so it shouldn't affect me too much.
Then I can use the pole to close the window, which would eliminate a continouous oxygen supply and limit the oxygen in the room.
The fire i'm dealing with is probably yellow, which is incomplete combustion.
I believe the chemical formula for that is CxHy + O2 -> CO2 + H2O + CO
Assuming i'm in the center of the room, and in the end is the window at 12 feet, the door must also be at 12 feet, so I can use the pole to try to clear the way by spreading the "h2o" portion of the chemical formula over the fire, putting it out, then leaving through the door, then getting out of the structure.
That's what I would do at least.
EDIT:
I'm pretty sure Chemistry is involved in the riddle.Last edited by Bluearrowll; 11-15-2008, 05:58 PM.1st in Kommisar's 2009 SM Tournament

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
There doesn't have to be gas falling into the fire. By "this explosion" I mean that it will inevitably occur if you can't figure out a solution. You'll tire out and drop the cup.
And the fires are tightly-packed. If you drop the gas anywhere, it's going to blow everything up in like a second.Comment

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
gaus: Hm, well I mean, that solution would work if you were actually able to do that. Was the cup full of something? I actually had stuff in my cup and didn't want to risk making a mess (nor, in the fire/gas situation, would I want to risk trying to push it out the window like that with such potentially lethal consequences). How many times did it take you to correctly push the cup? If your answer is "more than one" then it's probably not something you'd want to do.
Sniper: You're in the middle of the room.
Again guys feel free to post your own riddles if you can't figure these out. Or try my math one out if you'd like.Last edited by MrRubix; 11-15-2008, 06:19 PM.Comment

Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth
I got it on the first try (though getting the cup up myself took a few trys) and repeated the results 2 times in a row after that. 3/3 + 100%.
I even made a fake window...
*edit*
And no the cup was not filled with a liquid. The "window" is a project im making & its not water-proof. It is my opinion that no liquid would have come out though because constant force was pushing anything contained down into the cup.Last edited by gausmaster; 11-15-2008, 06:24 PM.Comment
