            Re: MrRubix's Riddle/Problem Thread: Rebirth

I don't feel like going out to buy a 10-foot pole to test this theory out, but I would conjecture that as long as there is an applied upward force equal to the weight of the cup and its contents, then it'll stay pressed against the ceiling. To model the situation, you can use the equation a^2 + o^2 = 100, where 'a' is the horizontal distance you've covered [approximately - the actual position is that of your lower hand (see below)], and 'o' is the vertical distance of the pole's bottom end from the ceiling. Facing away from the window, if you have one hand pushing lightly downward on the pole near its base and the other farther outward pushing forcefully upward, the distance 'h' that you would have to raise your lower arm would then be described by 10 - o, or 10 - root(100-a^2). Your 'a' value therefore must be less than 10. Let's assume a safe value of 6, which would leave you a plausible six feet to cover. In this case, 'o' would equal 8, so 'h' would equal 2 feet, which, with a reasonable arm length of 3 feet, falls within physical capabilities (after having covered 6 horizontal feet, you would be holding the pole end about a foot above your head, giving you just enough reach with the other arm to create the makeshift lever system). As you approached the limit of your partial pole revolution, you would simply whip around, sprint forward, and dive out the window. The 15 feet that the cup must traverse should allow you sufficient time for escape. You'd get out with burnt feet, though. -_-

                    I give.

Why not just pull out my cell phone and dial 911? It only takes one hand to dial...

If that's not an option, you could always try screaming for help, if there's a window, that means it leads outside, and unless you're in the middle of nowhere, somebody's bound to hear you.

And if that's not an option either, I guess I would dump the cup against the wall on the side of the room opposite the window, and crawl under the flames to the window, (as I'm assuming they're not touching the floor or else the whole place would have been on fire already). And if the flames are indeed on the floor, I'd pole vault to the window.

Or I'd just yell "Cut!!" and get my stunt double.

Now I can use my new viagra-intensified penis to balance the cup against the ceiling as I use the pole to pole vault out the window.

                          Yea...

I suppose you could maybe pour the gas down the tube (assuming the pole is actually a tube) with your hand on the bottom end and then run out through the window with it. It's just a guess.

So how is it supposed to be done?

                              Here's my thoughts:

The ceiling is 15 feet, and the person is 6 feet tall. This means the bottom of the pole is about chest height. I would adjust my grip on the pole so that both hands are on the same side of the pole, and then pull it straight down so that the cup is not touching the top, and while looking up at the cup, just slam the pole down on the ground. The mug and the stuff inside should both fall down very uniformly if I did this right. I am also still looking up and concentrating on the falling cup, so I can catch it quite easily. I can assume that any drops that may spill from the cup will fall very near to the area that I am standing. I also assume that I am not close enough to the flames so as to be in danger of burning, so the small spillage that may occur seems negligible. Now, for the same reason I can put the mug on the floor, and maybe even pick up the pole and prop it against the window. I realize the pole may have been in the flames, and I guess I'm just assuming it is a metal pole (it didn't melt as if it were plastic). I can climb on the pole to avoid the flames if necessary to reach the window.

Seems like a pretty reasonable solution to me.

                              I'm retired

You're in a building, and there is nobody around to help or hear you. By a very unfortunate turn of events, you find yourself in the middle of a room surrounded by a series of incredibly packed, small, controlled flames. You're holding a pole (say an inch in diameter), which is currently pressed up against a cup (just an ordinary mug, let's say) of gasoline, which is pressed up against the ceiling. The cup is filled up until a sixteenth of an inch below the very top. If *any* gasoline touches any of the flames around you, it will cause a massive chain explosion. The controlled fires will not die out naturally. There is an open window about 12 feet to your left, and there will never be any wind coming in. You are 6 feet tall with average proportions. The ceiling is 15 feet high. The pole is 10 feet long. You may make any other reasonable assumptions. How do you avoid getting killed by this explosion (you can't simply stay there forever... you will eventually faint/pass out/lose strength/etc)?
Why would anyone be pressing a cup filled with gasoline to the ceiling with a pole in the first place?
