when I pick a 10 I expect to get something similar to the other 10s I've played. We shouldn't have to 'assume' certain files are 11s when they're listed as 10s.

I'm so tired of the if so n so were staff, if I were staff, etc etc. The fact is people CAN help without staff titles but don't seem to really want to. If you want something done about the difficulties stop complaining, go through the songs and re rate them. Then come and present them to staff. There once was an actual difficulties thread. All I know is everyone wants to complain but no body wants to bring an actual solution to the problem. Make up a well organized pitch about how you would change whatever it is you'd change rather than just sitting and complaining all the time.

Also, people act like staff is doing absolutely nothing at all. If you really want to help them then just chill out for a while and give them a chance to get things done. Some stuff might not even matter once blackwebb comes out. Hell I'm not even sure what all the features are going to be on it, but what if one of them is like how thirdstyle has ratings? Thirdstyle auto rates files based on how many are playing and the scores achieved on it. But seriously, everyone just needs to chill out. There have been plenty of people past and present who have done tons to help the site without a title.

Etc etc. (I know this one dudes name but I can't put my name on it. Most good ones are in Stepmania and stay far away from this dumpheap. So props to all the new guys out there that are new, and actually make GOOD FUN FILES)
There are more but im just naming some off the top and my more fav artists. SPECIALLY Kommisar.
Why?
Maybe because they don't step every ****ing note to the exact millionth of a second? Maybe because they do things to make the file fun, regardless if it's hard or not. They don't over use arrows.
90% of the songs now in Stepmania and now here unfortunately are extremely over stepped or ****ing suck dick.
Go play ODI, ODI2.
Those are STILL ONE OF THE MOST PLAYED PACKS TILL THIS DAY.
Why?
The files are fun regardless of the difficulty, not over stepped, not understepped. It was made how the song feels and how it feels it should be played. It was fun for everyone and still is.

This is why these new stepartists excel and others fail. They took what used to be... And expanded on it, not completely making their own thing... But following what they thought would be fun and not trying to be a perfectionist.
Because if I went back and stepped ALL the songs on FFR... Some would be a lot harder, and some would be understepped compared to their file as it is now.

To sum it up.
Make files fun and stop ****ing making Stepmania feel like more work. Most songs I play through hoping it will be over so i can just play the next song. You should have good song choice, you should choose to step a song because you think it sounds good. Not because you think the file would be easy/hard. Because you as a stepartist think this would be a fun file and people would enjoy it.

Sorry for being late to the party.

So here's my views.

I see exactly what you mean when you say that you want the game to cater more to casuals, and this much is important indeed. However, we can't get our concepts mixed up.

The new-age style of charts that try to use more abstract rhythms and techniques are catered to those that can appreciate them, but they seem ridiculous for someone that doesn't care for it. However, they are an important part of the modern chart repertoire.

I have not kept up with the new FFR charts, but some charts are in fact a little bit... off. These charts, however, are what you are talking about, and it simply comes down to how good the judges are at judging charts. There's a lot of people well-versed with making and judging charts, but few of us have really substantiated our concepts and guidelines for such things, and as a result can sometimes be biased.

However, they're not the only ones who are biased. For example, you mentioned a dislike for triples. Just like anything else, abused concepts are not fun, and triples are no exception. However, given the playstyle and the mechanics of the game, you have to realize that without triples, the game degenerates. Hard. On top of that you also have to consider what constitutes a triple in the first place. A very fast grace note to a double could also be considered a triple in regards to mechanical timing. Try to be open to concepts that are supposed to be a critical part of the game.

Don't harbor any ill feelings though. The difficulties need to be pushed in order to for the game to be interesting for some other players, and if you're not the intended audience then your opinion of the chart shouldn't be that important. FFR does in fact suffer from a compressed difficulty syndrome. The 1-13 scale really isn't enough to cover the bounds and that's why the difficulty thread with 1-100 scaling was created.

It's still good you brought up the topic though, as it opens up a lot of discussion and ideas for everyone to better themselves. My point is simply that nobody on either side here is perfect, we've all got a way to go.

Inconsistant difficulty system, or recent files are too hard, or recent files are overstepped/generally bad?

I asked the same thing. It's pretty unclear what the op was really upset about. But most in this thread bring up the difficulty system being off, which we all know is true.

I have a new difficulty system of level 10+ songs, but It's only for 4 genres at the moment, and it's not updated. It was from ages ago when qqwref, iironiic and I were going to re-do it. We just never really got to it.

Well I already have a good gist of it in mind because we use a one to fifty scale on df but this one is going to be 1 - 100. Shouldn't be too hard for me to do being that I've played most stuff on this site like a million times. Lol


Edit: yea OWA gonna go 1-100 with it. Let me start grouping some stuff and getting stuff into place and we'll talk. I'm going to end up putting it up for everyone to take a peek at when I feel it's about right. That way people can put their input in.

The old list should still be a huge help if you can find it and want to use it, if you are doing 1-99.
