Do you play to the rhythm or do you just hit notes as you see them?

...I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I've found myself paying less and less attention to the songs as time goes on. On harder songs (harder is probably VC for me) I often just turn the music off and hit notes as I see them. I don't even get a beat or pattern going in my head usually, I just let my fingers spaz out and hit notes as they get close. Unfortunately my PA is horrible (85%-95%) except on the easiest of songs, so I'm wondering if you guys have found some way to synch up a rhythm to the notes and play better.

I ask this because there are a few songs which have such distinct sounds that I can actually play really well if I just get a rhythm going (e.g. secret zombie room), and also my PA doesn't seem to improve at all over time even when I focus really hard on it. In order for me to get like 98%+ perfects I have to focus so hard that I end up missing notes on even tricky/difficult songs -- there's got to be a better way of improving this.

I hope that wasn't too randomly articulated.

If turning off the music is required to get a better PA, I do so.

A little bit of both; most steps are there for a reason. I can usually sightread AAA anything challenging or below, but in the cases I don't, I just play the song through so I get an idea of what it's like. I'll then keep playing it with sound on, but if its to no avail, I just mute it and tap away (esp. for rock songs that are terribly offsync COUGHELECTRICWEREWOLFCOUGH).

But I usually leave the sound on, because it helps me understand the note patterns/rhythms better, I actually like to listen to something whilst playing a rhythm game, and some songs are actually worth listening to.

Also, a lot of the time when I'm having trouble AAAing/FCing/comboing/passing a song at all, certain difficult parts don't stand out to me when just reading, but audio cues help me know they're upcoming so I won't be caught offguard. But really, whatever works for you.

Play with sound on if you have to, turn it off if need be.
Why would you put that in your signature? You've lost your signature rights for a month. (You'll get them back on March 10th, 2012.)

To me, having to turn the sound off in order to do well on the song is the mark of a poor stepfile, or a poor choice of song to step. My favourite songs have both close rythmic accuracy, and a high degree of pitch relevence.

I like patterns that make sense. Random steps where the music doesn't suggest they should go, or arrows that are patterned randomly just to be a certain pattern or to make the song more difficult make me not want to play the song.

The only time I ever turn the sound off is when I'm in tourneys (since tournament organisers seem to -love- the old off-sync blue-note synth songs) or when I just can't avoid such a song while working on my levelrank.

When I'm playing for fun, the only songs I play are the ones where I don't -need- to turn the sound off, because the steps match the songs.

Not only a furry, but stupid.

Depends on the song with me. Of course if it's off sync I turn off the sound. It usually messes me up if I try to go on beat.

That's not it, only about less than 20 songs are off sync. I can play listening to other music. I was playing Beethoven Virus listening to Pants. It doesn't affect me at all, and shut the hell up Kekeb.

IMO, whether or not you have to pay attention to the rhythm depends on the patterns in the song.

Songs that are all simple 16th stream for example don't really require you to pay attention to the rhythm. You just see the notes and it's like your brain and fingers hit them automatically.

Jumpstream on the other hand, I have to pay attention to the music to figure out the pattern. It's also pretty hard for me to do the tricky pattern at the end of Legend without getting into the rhythm.

What kind of garbage keyboard are you using? Well over half the songs in FFR have an offset that's so late it makes me vomit all over my monitor.

Seriously, if your keyboard has that slow of a response time, I think you should invest in a new one. For example, if you find Naisyaodakunyan or Sensorium early, your keyboard is too slow. Also, if you find stepfiles from dore/ElectricWerewolf are synced, once more, your keyboard sucks.

dore/EW are my favorite stepartists...they're usually onsync for me...

I'm not saying they're bad stepartists, just that they have crappy keyboards. Every time I see a dore/EW stepfile, I cringe because I know it's going to be extremely off sync.
