After a week of hype-building, it's ready to go! Stepocalypse is a short yet VERY difficult competition to determine the elites of the Stepmania world. It's inspired very heavily by and totally not a blatant ripoff of Bearpocalypse, Mad Matt's series of elite ITG competitions.
Qualifying Round: Sep. 21-27
Stepocalypse Date: Oct. 1-7
(PS: Sorry, this is for 4k, non-index play only. Separate events for index and 6k will require interest from potential collaborators, especially for index.)
Format
Qualifiers
There will be a week-long qualifying round on 5 classic simfiles, ranging from very easy to insanely hard. The top 12 or top 25% of all players, whichever is higher, will form the Competitive group during the competition proper. There will also be an Open group open to all players who submit scores for qualifiers.
All scores during the competition will be tallied using the MIGS scoring system (the same as the standard DP system but with marvs receiving +3 instead of +2). Higher rates will be allowed, with scaling so that AAs with decent MA on high rates will beat all scores on lower rates. The official formula for rates above 1.0 is [MIGS%]^(rate^(-0.5))*rate*100. 0.9x is also allowed, but your score will be halved.
The competition proper consists of two 75-minute sets, each with their own song list and point system. There will be a week in which players must play both sets. The Competitive group will schedule their sets during the week in order of performance on qualifiers. There will also be a limit on how many people can play per day (though this is subject to protest).
Set 1: Tiers
The first set will consist of 9 tiers of increasing difficulty, each of which contains 3 songs. The Competitive group should be able to AAA/SDG all of the songs in Tier 1 without difficulty, while Tier 9 will be nearly impossible to AA. There will be an additional, easier "Tier 0" open only to the Open group, for a total of 30 songs. Rates are not allowed on this set.
At the end of this set, the player's highest MIGS score obtained in each tier will be added up. They will also receive a bonus for each tier in which they got 92.5% MIGS or higher on all three songs. These bonuses increase gradually per tier.
Each tier consists of a "Speed" song, a "Stamina" song, and an "Other" song. The "Other" category tests skills not covered by the other two categories, such as jacks, bursts, and unusual patterns and rhythms.
Set 2: PUSH IT
The second set simply contains a list of 26 files of increasing difficulty, ranging from as easy as Tier 0 to harder than Tier 9 in the pervious set. They also test all of the skills covered in the Tiers categories. Rates are allowed on this set, but only those at or above 1.0.
At the end of this set, your highest score on each song will initially be worth [MIGS%]*[DIFF]*(rate)^1.5 points, where DIFF is a multiplier that increases exponentially with difficulty. Raw scores at or below 75% MIGS will be squared before being plugged into this formula (i.e, if you get a 74.5% on a file with a DIFF of 4.20, the score will be worth (74.5%)^2*4.2 = 55.5%*4.2 = 233.1 points). After this weighting, your score will be the sum of your top eight scores, plus half the sum of all other scores.
Songs
The song lists for both sets can be found here. This spreadsheet will later be updated with full statistics for the qualifying rounds and the Competitive group's sets. All but two of the files (IMAGE -MATERIAL- and Peace Breaker) are currently released, although some of them are a little obscure (Electric Butterfly is in Buncha Files You Don't Have 3 and Air Raid is in SM Taiwan Mix Pack, for instance). However, everything below Tier 7 in Tiers and Q in PUSH IT is available through SMO. For songs with multiple difficulties, the chart being used is the most difficult one except where noted. The qualifier songs will remain hidden until the day of.
Rules & Guidelines
The files will be specifically packaged up for the competition, along with generic GFX to guarantee that you are playing the competition files. This is to make browsing through the files by difficulty easier, and to make the chart difficulty consistent across all files. The standard judge 4, life 4 (life 2 for SM5 builds b3 or older) is mandatory. Fail off is not allowed, and of the remaining modes immediate fail is highly recommended. The only mod which substantially changes the file which will be allowed is mirror. All mods that change the appearance of the arrows are permitted.
During each phase of the competition, the only accepted form for scores will be screenshots sent via PM (preferably in the form of an Imgur album, Dropbox album or similar). To enforce the time limit during the competition proper, you will need to timestamp your pictures. There are themes for SM5 which have a clock visible at all times, but I don't know about 3.95. I may recommend using themes which have a visible clock or post how to add one to your theme if yours doesn't have one. To begin your set, you must take a single picture of the set's pack folder. Any scores taken within 1 minute of the time limit will be reduced by half, and any later scores will be ignored.
Videos are encouraged, but do not replace screenshots. Streaming is HIGHLY encouraged if you can, but try not to bump elbows with anyone else, ESPECIALLY if you're in the Competitive tier. SMO will most likely waste time, so you probably shouldn't use it.
Tiny nitpick: where rates are allowed, only use rates that are multiples of 0.1 (i.e 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, but not 1.25). Don't min/max too hard.
Lastly, for fuck's sake, don't be BS. This may be a competition, but it's mainly for fun. People will find out. Bitch.
Credit prizes aren't planned but could happen with proper backing. Also, sign-ups I guess (make sure your post contains the word "in").
