Judah and Tamar - At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her; she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
Genesis 38. Chapters 8, 9, 10.
8: Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother."
9: But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.
10: What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.
The main part of the passage being, 'What he did was wicked in the Lord's sight'. I haven't found anything to say that if it was because he was supposed to impregnate the woman or because it wasn't that he was wicked, or because he simply masturbated. The bible is full of much controversy. The same passage can be interpretted many ways by many people. So, I have no idea what the true meaning is.

I'm pretty sure the problem here is not that he masturbated--he was "laying with his brother's wife" which to me translates as having sex with her--but that he did not impregnate her. Masturbation is a single-person ordeal (let's leave mutual masturbation out of it for now) and what he was doing is technically called "pulling out." I am actually amazed that Onan's brother's wife DIDN'T get pregnant, because it's a terrible method of birth control.
That being said, I don't think the Bible should be anyone's guide as to the question of masturbation. If you enjoy it, do it. If you don't, don't. We've all seen what happens when people don't masturbate/have sex/get SOME kind of sexual fulfillment: They usually end up raping/molesting/otherwise harming someone ELSE to get their own jollies. I don't approve of that.
Man, now this thread's got me all thinking if those Monks that live in the mountains (you know, the ones that are all pure and have no worldly possessions) masturbate.
You might want to clarify (Chromer) whether or not you want this discussion to be directed towards a biblical one or not. From the Bible's stand point maybe it is a sin (idk, I'm not very educated on the subject). What's so perplexing about that?
I could use the simple 'I think Bible is bs' argument, in which case it isn't a sin. It depends on how empirically we're taking the discussion. I'm not trying to come off as rude or anything- I'm just unsure as what there is (or needs be) to actually discuss. The whole issue to me seems pretty subjective.

Christians, and Christianity stress repent and be saved, this attaches itself to all sins. Masturbation has only been frowned upon by over-zealous christians, spreading the lies like, "Masturbating makes your palms hairy," more than likely not as an honest superstition, or that god doesn't like it, but that if they masturbate, the person spreading said rumor doesn't want to know about it.
The bible creates things that are shameful, but not neccesarily a sin- alla. Eve's awareness of her nudity. God doesn't punish her for being nude, but the apples of knowledge that he put there created such a standard.
I'm not a particularly christian person, (largely because as a teen, I don't feel I have the time to apply much more of christianity to my life than it's morals, and will save the praising, and spirituality thing when I have a job, and more to be thankful for than my parent's hard work.) but I'm knowledgable of it due to discussions with my parents, and having gone to church for the first 10 years of my life.
See this means Jesus broke the rules, therefore he is a rebel, and if your religious enough you will follow jesus and become a rebel, by masturbating...
Anywho religions never did us any good has it? Religion causes wars and nothing better, take Jesus for example...did he live hapily ever after? No....he died, and no he did not ressurect himself cuz ther is no proof...o wait....a book...
its kinda silly cuz say thousands of years later....the newer generation would discover a harry potter book, they might start to believe all the stuff they read in it.
Well I Just think Jesus wanted to change the way society ran, and im pretty sure he didnt want us all to worship him or god in any aspect.
I've always read Onan's sin to be against pulling out (and, thus, contraception) rather than masturbation, but that's just me.
Also, whorli, I'm pretty sure that since Onan's brother was dead that he had every legal right to his wife.

Sorry, Andy--that last part was aimed more at child-molesting priests than Onan's brother having sex with the dead dude's wife. Once you're dead you really have no say in who has sex with your wife and I have no problem with that

Though it is I am sure, a highly insightful topic .. and definitely requires the full range of critical thinking for some. We think this is best suited in the Garbage Bin.
Moved .. and enjoy
