asking for a reason to most human emotions or the way things appeal to us wont get you much. its just something inside that tells you that you like it. brain functions or something... whatever. different people have different definitions of beauty because of various innumerable factors inside their mind, so basically the answer to "why is it beautiful" is simply "because".Comment

I find beauty in snow. I'm telling you, when I get the chance I'm gonna go move to Alaska or someplace, or at least take a trip there, and go hiking in the mountains. I can't give an explanation or anything for it, its an instinctive feeling.
And about art not being useful, one use for it that I can think of off the top of my head is as religious symbols. For example, in Greece, they would paint their vases with mythological creatures to give its recipient (if its for an award) luck in whatever the god's power is.Every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lives here on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

First off, 2+2!=4 if you don't believe it does.
Sure, it seems like a common fact, but consider that to many people, God is just as simple a truth (in terms of existence) as that simple addition problem. Yet by the same token that people can disbelieve what so many others believe to be true with respect to God, someone could disbelieve that 2+2=4. And you know what? If their mind was set on it, and truly did believe it, no one would be able to prove to that person that they were wrong.
Therefore, it seems that truth, and beauty, is firstly the right of an individual to determine, yet that individual may be swayed by other people's thoughts to the point where what is considered true and what is considered beautiful is really only the majority opinion. I think you can all see the paralells to the fashion industry there.Comment
