    I can do this.

I can actually crack most of the joints in my body. Ankles, shoulders, neck, toes, fingers, back, knees. One time I stood up from the dinner table and cracked most of these at the same time. Surprised me so much I fell over. It was quite audible to people in the next room.

I can't fold my tongue but I can roll it. Not just into that "hot dog bun" shape, but I mean twist it too.

Fold the tongue? Do you mean folding the front part over the back? Or something else?

If you can produce a cracking noise, great, but that's not what I'm talking about in the least bit.
If you can produce a rumbling "earthquake" sound inside of your own head without flexing your jaw, then you can do this.
So far it seems like only rubix and possibly customstuff have control over this muscle from what I've read.
Question: I have been thinking about this a lot recently, as you just brought it up, playing with different ideas mostly, and came to discover something. I can produce the "earthquake" rumbling, but only when I breathe. I know I am not flexing my jaw when doing this. Does this sound about right or is this something else?

Probably should have taken a minute for my first post to say that I too do this all the time. Which is part of why, in my original post, assumed that a lot more people could do it.

I can maintain it for a decent amount of time but it requires me closing my eyes. Does that count?

Also able to flex it, and use it to cancel out sounds or if my inner ear feels tickled/scratchy.

Thanks for the link, never knew it had a name; gotta check it out.

I can do it too. Low end rumble, same sound you get when yawning, but I can do it without yawning. I don't even need to move any face muscles to do it.

Is it the same sound as when you block your ears with your hands?

@psycho, redorigami: I'm not questioning anyone's ability to use this muscle, as it activates by itself under certain conditions, so everyone experiences this sound from time to time. If you have to give yourself a condition, ie. closing your eyes, yawning, breathing, tensing jaw, etc. then it's just that you don't actually have full control over it is all. It should be as easy as moving a finger, you don't even have to think about it.

i.e. you could be sitting there, immobile, staring off into space -- and yet still able to generate the effect within your head

I have no idea what anyone is talking about.. I've never had any indication that I've ever had a muscle there, I've never heard any sounds like a rumbling or clicking, even when I yawn. Maybe that surgery I got when I was young somehow affected this muscle?

Also, I can't pop my ears, if I try, it's incredibly painful.
