It's mainly meant for programmers. (I assume anyway.) Because you use the terminal alot and you can write any program in any/most language(s)... Heck, this one person i know does'nt even use the desktop. =p (Just uses Terminal. AKA: Command Line)
I find Vista and XP to be equally awesome...I think Vista hate is just a fad. Vista has some nice new features, but they're not really worth upgrading hardware for; just get it on a new computer. UAC is annoying, though, they really should've thought it out better so that it didn't pop up every two seconds.
Macs: I have a personal bias against Steve Jobs and thus dislike Macs, but even disregarding that, I find that OS X is too restrictive for anything I may want to do. All of the cool programs you can get for it each cost $15, etc. Sure, Macs look sexy, but so does Vista. Also, I'm firmly in the camp that believes Macs are generally more secure than Windows only because they are targeted less due to a lower marketshare. Even so, Vista has much more security than XP (I'm not talking about UAC...that doesn't count; things like IE sandboxing do), and no major vulnerabilities have been uncovered.
Linux is very awesome (particularly Ubuntu Hardy Heron) if you have at least 25% geek in you. You have to be willing to jump in headfirst in order to customize it to your wishes, and after you do that, I think its abilities and features trump both OS X and Vista...and there are finally themes that make it look as good/better. Even if you aren't super-geeky, it's still pretty sweet. Plus, its ability to run well on even the meanest of hardware is amazing. Also, I love Compiz.
But seriously, XP is pretty good. I've only had one major problem, and that was because I downloaded something corrupt.
I've also got a Leopard machine in the house, which is really cool as well. We bought one of those huge monitors, and it's overwhelming to look at. =P

Even if macs were #1 in marketing, they'd still be very secure, much more secure than Windows. Personally, I use a Mac, because :
1. Built in Mic, built in cam.
2. No stupid viruses
3. The computer itself and Leopard are gorgeous
4. I don't have to refrag or however you say, my computer or such. I've never had any problems of that type on Leopard.
5. It's stable. There are no bugs, and even if there are you can just force quit within 2 clicks(I've actually had troubles doing that on PC)
6. If there's something on PC I really want to use, I've got Boot Camp. But even then, I've never felt the need to do so.

To be honest, my computers/laptops have only ran off Windows so I can't really voice opinions on Macs or anything...
However, I'm probably going to continue using Windows software for the rest of my life because it's simply what I'm used to. Switching over to Macs now would piss me off because I'm so used to the Window's layout. I mean, even my new computer is starting to annoy me due to the fact that it has Windows Vista. I'm so used to how everything is on XP since I've been using it for so long, that it's just plain annoying trying to re-learn how everything works, and etc.
In all honestly though, Vista isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Sure, the new software and everything nowadays has issues installing...but the layout/new features are really quite interesting. And while typing this, I have every intention of downgrading to XP again soon, LOL.
