Re: HPV Vaccine For Girls Now Mandatory
Before it was widely publicized that this virus could lead to cancer, were people more promiscuous?
It shouldn't have any real effect on sexual activity. It's not like it's a "the pill" vaccine. It's just a vaccine for something that was previously not even well known to have been a possible cause of cancer.

Promote early exploration?http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2383016.shtml
So what does everyone think about it? Personally, I think it might promote early sexual exploration but that's just my opinion.
PROMOTE EARLY EXPLORATION?!?
Even if it did slightly increase the "early exploration" (which happens anyway - kids don't think about diseases at all and they are very bad at realizing they are not immortal), wouldn't it be worth it to halt the major form of cervical cancer in women?
This is the stuff that bugs me - "If we teach kids about sex it will encourage them". Who cares if it encourages them, as long as they are safer when they do it. Plus it really does not have an effect.
Plus I maintain that the only reason anybody cares about this is that it's female-oriented. If this were something anyone could catch like hepatitus, now, we'd all be ready for that one.
Also, think about a possible vaccine for AIDS. We'd be swamping kids with that stuff. It's the only logical thing to do, and nobody would contest it.
But a vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, well... "oh it might encourage them".
Sorry Chromer. I don't mean to aim this all at you, it just got me started.C is for Charisma, it's why people think I'm great! I make my friends all laugh and smile and never want to hate!Comment

Re: HPV Vaccine For Girls Now Mandatory
One of the big issues about it here in Texas was that we're not sure if it's a safe drug or not yet, considering its relatively young age. Long-term effects just haven't been accurately tested.
Preventing HPV spread is great, but possibly giving every schoolchild something that causes a different kind of cancer at the same time isn't as cool.

I've also heard that the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the vaccination and the guy who purposed the whole vaccination deal are buddy-buddys, which has lead someone people to think that profit is the main incentive in making it mandatory.Comment

Re: HPV Vaccine For Girls Now Mandatory
I also heard (like guido said) that they aren't entirely sure if the vaccine is safe or not. My girlfriend was going to get it but her doctor told her to think about it for a bit and to give it time to see how safe it is. I highly HIGHLY doubt that a vaccine would cause earlier exploration than there already is. That to me is malarcy in a can.Originally posted by SynthlightEveryone uses quotes from Synthlight in their signature. So I'm making this one up to fit in.

What, it's just a vaccination. What's the big f*cking deal? I mean, just because cause you give a kid a tetanus shot doesn't mean they think it's okay to go around stepping on rusty nails.
What the f*ck is this? The 18th century? Should we start stitching scarlet letters to people's clothes? Why not just lock up sexually liberal people into camps so they can't contaminate the rest of the population. Hell, why stop there? Just huddle them into gas chambers and ovens.
And what's wrong with parents sitting their daughters down and telling them not to go around spreading their legs strangers? Has society devolved to the point where we have to dissolve parents of all responsibility? Are people that stupid?Comment

What?
I'm pretty sure you mean "The vaccine protects against a virus which is gotten through sexual contact, and 6th grade is a little young for that." It doesn't take being sexually active for the vaccine to work(that is, prevent the HPV from causing cancer); it's just that the vaccine protects against something which is normally obtained through sex.

Wow Jewp calm down. So the kid gets a sexually-inhibited disease vaccine and that's that. Now if we start getting complaints of kids becoming more sexually active because of this thing, I don't wanna hear nuthin.' =P

Actually, it only becomes active when it comes in contact with semen...and to make sure it works, Doctors have to bang their patients....so they've been getting away with bonking 11-year-olds legally while the rest of us have go to Cambodia (and other third world countries) or risk getting busted on Dateline to feed our pedophiliac urges. What?

Yes, I heard about that pill. I can't remember where, though.
On topic, I think that it's good that they're actually getting somewhere with these cancer medications. It might not be a safe drug now, but in 10 years it could be saving lives.

Re: HPV Vaccine For Girls Now Mandatory
Wiki states that: "With a cost of $360, Gardasil is the most expensive vaccine ever developed."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website also says that it may not be covered by all insurance companies. (found under cost and coverage of the HPV vaccine). Although there seem to be some organizations that will help with the cost. Wiki also has more information on this, but it's more directed at under developed countries (found under the 'Implementation' section).
Wiki also says: "The only HPV vaccine currently on the market is Gardasil, with a second vaccine, Cervarix, currently in clinical trials."
So until some other pharmaceutical company comes up with one of their own, unless Merck & Co., Inc. decides to share the rights of the drug with the world... It's the only option available.
Another Wiki insert you guys might want to know... "HPV also causes anal and penile cancer. As the drug is licensed for girls and boys aged 9 to 15 and for women aged 16 to 26, the drug has to be administered to men "off license", although many doctors are happy to oblige."
Off license, meaning, a doctor would have to go off record to supply it to man. What is this? A snub at the gay community? That aside, wouldn't a man want to be protected against something like that equally as much as a woman?Comment
