As much as it may seem otherwise from my drawing preferences, I agree with you, Jewp.

A couple weeks ago I was approached by some random dude in one of my classes who noticed me doodling. He asked if I was an artist. I hate this question... I like to draw a lot, but I never say "I'm an artist" or "I can draw". I tend to answer "I just like to draw." (I was also asked "Can you draw?" by a head of the illustration department at my school when I was thinking about applying. It's like a trap question...... I had to answer "depends on what you mean by 'can'... but I like to." )

As of now I consider myself an amateur craftsman in my area of interest. I'm working on perfecting the look of my drawings... that's not art, it's craft. It would be a long way down the road before I could think of myself as an artist.

I'll still call my work "art" sometimes though, simply for a lack of a better term.

These are literally the EXACT same answers I give when I'm asked the same question.

Yeah, it's pseudo-anime, but I figured out a long time ago that anime's a cheap craft. Anybody can do it. Liking what you do is what makes it different. If my art class gives instructions to a sketch a real person, then I'll do it and try my hardest, but in my spare time, I'll be drawing what I like.

Hehe, it seems Negi and I share similar views.

I've also figured out that to be able to do anything really great, you have to become obsessed. You have to love it... or you won't be able to give it the same kind of soul. That's why you should draw what you want, no matter what people say. Just remember to be humble about it.

I draw anime 90% of the time and it has never effected the way I draw bowls of fruit or whatever. Never has never will, I've never met a person who suffers from that problem either and I know a sh*t load of "artists", around 50% of which, draw anime a lot. It would be more weird if the amount of anime you draw effects drawing everything else, as if there some sort of weighing scale, in which to be better at one thing you have to sacrifice skill from the other, that's the biggest load of bollocks I've heard all day in fact.

I really like Carbos picture, I think it's the second one, with the funky hair.

I find a good technique is to just go for it, be confident. Sometimes, I just doodle, but when I do, I make sure to go with whatever my heads telling me. If the proportion seems wrong just leave it as if it's not. Sometimes you'll find you were right, if not, you can take that error and learn from it. I find a lot of people, me included sometimes, get halfway through a drawing and start questioning it. They get all this self doubt in there drawing and try to mend it, get hung up on it and sometimes eventually spoil the picture. I did this last night lol. The picture had a lot of potential too. I'm just saying have confidence when you draw. Not the confident frame of mind "this picture is going to be the one!" but more the confidence in your skill.

I have a problem with lacking concepts. :/ I guess that's the main reason I fail to consider myself an "artist".

I usually end up drawing similar things (like cute disembodied heads) over and over because it's fun to draw eyes and hair, but when I try to make a full-fledged picture I run into problems. That's one reason why I'm trying to get more comfortable with drawing bodies/poses so that hopefully more variety will come with the comfort level.

Also, I have a very very hard time making something look good without being cute. XD

I have some of the same problems actually. I enjoy drawing the head and all (though thanks to being near obsessive compulsive about my art, I end up redrawing the same pupil about 50 times....), and then when it comes to the body, the drawing basically dies..........
I never really considered myself an artist, mainly because there was always someone 10x better than me that I knew. lol. Either way, as I said before, writing is more my forte, so mostly I just draw for fun.

In a way I'm glad you do that. It makes me sad to see when so many people wish they could draw but then don't even try because they assume they have no ability.

Everyone starts out poorly.... none of those amazing artists were born drawing like that. So if you want to draw... draw =) regardless of how good you are. An important thing to learn is to take those great artists as inspiration rather than a put-down.

That's what I'm saying. Be confident and finish the picture. If you get hung up on something you'll start getting bored and lose confidence in the rest of it. I'm not saying attention to detail is wrong I'm just saying going over and over and over is not helping much. The amont of drawing I have started and never finished because I got bored/ruined/gave up is stupid. Ah well.

When I feel like putting a honest effort into my artwork I do, but most of the time I just doodle.
