Re: My failed anime drawing
Something is awfully awry in this thread as of late.
I can't imagine what it is.
ps - I always thought drawing was a part of that whole right brain / left brain thing?
I mean, I'd love to be able to draw, but I've tried to learn so many times and it just won't work. There's just a part of what I draw that makes the end product look completely different from what I envision.Comment

Re: My failed anime drawing
You have a right brain... you have a left brain. Unless you've had some horrific brain damage I don't know about, you should be able to cultivate skills from both sides. People do usually naturally lean one way over the other, but that doesn't mean you're completely useless in your "off" side. As you can see I can communicate in written language relatively well, and I enjoy science and related things, but I also like to draw. Imagine that!
Oh believe me, that's completely normal. Nothing I draw ever comes out like I imagined either. I guess that's what people are constantly struggling to try to accomplish. Even jaw-droppingly amazing artists have problems with this.
What you end up learning to do is work with what you get. Even if it doesn't turn out exactly how you imagined, you can do your best and still make it into something that looks good. It's almost like your drawing has a life of its own, and you work with it.♪~

Re: My failed anime drawing
Forgot to comment on this.
Haha, cool
We share something in common, because I also won Art of the Month in Nintendo Power 5 years ago! XD Weird. In fact, they printed it another time in their anniversary issue, on the page where they put together all of the favorite art they've received. I was pretty happy. I also got a sweet free Gamecube shirt!
Edit: here's a scan of the thing I did a while ago:
I haven't scanned the large photocopy of the original, but I could if anyone cares.
It's from Dec '02, Vol. 163. The envelope drawing was based on my cabin from Camp Hyrule (Totakeke/K.K.Slider was our mascot, and we had a LOT of cabin spirit). I signed it as Dragonbarrel because that's what my Camp Hyrule people knew me by.
Edit 2: I forgot to mention that I was also printed another time in an earlier issue, with a drawing of the dog from Harvest Moon and a sunset. That didn't win anything, but it was one of the ones printed in the side of the letters page. They didn't give me credit in the envelope art list D: I was sad. So I kept trying.
Yeah, it used to be a dream of mine when I was younger to get some art printed in a magazine such as Nintendo Power, so I did a it a lot. Not anymore, though... my mission is accomplished :PLast edited by jamuko; 03-30-2007, 10:38 PM.♪~

Re: My failed anime drawing
I draw on and off, usually anime.
I've also tried starting two webcomics over the last two years. The whole idea behind it was to use it to bolster my drawing skills so that I'd be in a good position to make a polished product right from the first page next go around.
However... I decided my first story was too bland, so I stopped my first one nearly right away, despite having ~200 rough sketches drawn up already. The sketches were a problem, too - I was thinking up jokes much more quickly than I was drawing up comics, and suddenly drawing to keep up seemed like a chore. I tried to go through with some quality control to cut down the number, but only felt that ~50 of them were not my absolute best.
Then, over the course of one really productive night, I realized that what I was doing was far too overplayed and I simply didn't have the heart in it to devote to it. At the same time, I realized that, though I was great with comedy, my true writing skills were in epic stories.
And then I was hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration and started writing dialogue for the first ten pages of a new story.
A few weeks passed, and I had written and done rough sketches for the first ~50 pages, or first "chapter" as I figured it. And then I was hit with the precise reverse of what I felt with my last project - I had too much heart and thought in this one. I was going to have an amazing story, yes, but accompanying them would be completely subpar drawings for who knew how far into the story.
I haven't officially dropped my second project simply because I like the story of it too much, but at the same time, I'm not confident enough in my drawing skill to start anything. And yet for some reason I'm too frustrated to keep at drawing every night.Comment

Well missy, it's not going to happen.
Ps. I drew this picture I was really proud of but I left it down a friends house. I'll bring it back tonight and take a picture of it.
