Too many stupid people asking the same retarded questions again and again because they are too lazy to follow the directions and read stickies answering their questions.
Solved. We have one of these topics every month or so as well.
Have you noticed that every big forum, EVERY ONE, is populated of mostly idiots and a few good posters? 1up, LWS, neopets, go-gaia (perfect example, although I wouldn't really call them a 'forum', per se), take your pick. We've been weeding out the sick and stupid in order to make your forum experience more enjoyable. It's a dirty job, but it's got to be done.
I have noticed how we've become clique-ish, but, like Anti said, it does have to be done, though maybe not in such a harsh manner.
I try to be nice to most of the one- and two-post newbs simply because they're newbs. I was one, too, and I know how much it sucks to be flamed on your first post (I sure as hell don't go to the RvB forums), so some credit must be given. I certainly don't want to drive away good potential posters.
Flagrant abuses of the rules, though, merit harsh flaming.
I've noticed this too. Every time I see someone's posts saying something mean to a newb, I keep thinking what they must think of us. That we're a bunch of arrogant asshats. I believe a good majority of people on Arch's forums feel this way already for this reason. It's why whenever a newb posts something that's been asked I give them the right answer with no sarcasm. Usually I use a number format explaining everything like.
1) You have to enough credits to see the secret songs.
2) Don't talk in caps, people don't like it, you'll just get flamed.
3) This has been asked many times before, please use the search function.
Rather than saying something like:
omg you dumbass, you only have 5 posts so you're wrong, you can't win, you suck. We're better than you and this has been posted like 500 times already. Read the rules or don't post here.
I have seen that second version being used so often it's not even funny.
Forum users naturally get tired of idiots as the days go by (unless the vasty majority of the userbase are idiots to begin with) and thus gradually get more and more annoyed with said morons until the regular users reach the point mentioned in the topic post.
Forum evolution, in a way.
I still remember how naive and eager-to-please I was back in my newbie days at GameFAQs in the summer of 2002 (yes, it took me that long to immerse myself in the internet and its forum ways). I never imagined then I would be doing/saying 98% of the things I do/say now.
Oh the times, they are a'changin'...
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.
What's worse is that I see one of the newb posts in Chit Chat and think "crap, not another one." Then I look at myself and just feel dirty. How could I be thinking like that? Just look at my first two posts. They were almost exactly like some of the other newb posts.
What really bothers me is having the newbs treated harshly. I would say "I know what it feels like" but that's not true. I managed to wiggle my way into the much more understanding CT forum before I was flamed away from the entire site. I've also caught myself doing the same for the new bright minds entering CT. "Another newb thinking he's a genius because he says confusing things." Isn't that exactly what I did at first? Even I think they were confusing.
I'm such a blithering hypocrite. At least I figured it out.
o.o; Everyone was nice to me, but I guess I cheated.
I noticed something similar to this back when I used to roleplay on AOL. There was this one group of RPers who hung out in a particular chat. They were all fantastic writers, really funny, really bitchy to anyone who tYpEd LiK dIs or just came off as a moron. I wanted DESPERATELY to be a part of them. I got "accepted into the fold," or however you'd like to put it, and I made some really good friends, but after a while it became less about roleplaying and more about making fun of newbs. We sort of took over the most popular rooms and made things really annoying for anyone who actually wanted to play.
I think part of it was just the acceptance. I was among the socially inept in school, and I liked being higher up on the chain than someone else. I think that's where the clique attitude comes from on FFR... I'm not calling anyone bitter losers or anything like that, but the power one gains from being a part of something other people have trouble getting into (especially if they don't prove their intelligence in three words or less) is intoxicating.
Forums have a distinct personality. Either you fit in or you don't. Sometimes you're forced to post at a forum you hate simply because it's relevant to you. (For example, I can't stand OhioDDR but I need to read it because I live in Ohio and I need to keep up on the Bemani and tournaments there.) Usually, you either realize what gets people mad and stop doing it, or you realize the forum's not for you and you leave.
It would behoove newbies to read rules threads and FAQs before posting. I do on every new forum I visit.
I do my best to prevent overt flaming of newbies. As a moderator, I need to try to keep things moderate. Flaming newbies is not permitted. But, if they do something wrong, I'm not going to say you're not allowed to tell them they're wrong...
