They just copied over their database from Ingress.
I think they basically turned ingress portals into pokestops, deleted about 2/3rds of them, and took anywhere that had a certain density of portals into a gym, or just spaced the gyms out sort of equally around the area.
i downloaded pokemon go how much do i need to know about pokemans to do a thing i know nothing and have never played any of their games can i just go back to butt time on puzzle and dragons or do i keep having to playing this until i know how a pokeman
maybe when it's not averaging 100+ degrees with insane humidity i'll consider playing this game although the premise of leveling up or evolving pokemon by catching more of that pokemon seems hella lame to me

or put another way, you get incentivized to walk around looking for pokemon and when you catch one you already have you give it back to the professor who releases it back into the wild
think of the "pokemon candy" as rare candies that pokemon in the main game series can hold when being caught but it's specific to each pokemon

it's pretty sketch. You send him a pidgey and he sends you "pidgey candy" which you then feed to a pidgey.
