Re: Mars 2023
So a generally barren planet prone to extreme dust storms where you will be locked in a relatively small capsule/greenhouse for years, probably not doing much at all other than trying to stay alive and running basic experiments while you contemplate your regret over the horrible decision you made.
Sounds great.
I don't even know what the point of these applications are. Most of the people applying for this are woefully ignorant of how brutal it would be over there, not to mention completely unqualified and would probably be dead in a couple of days because of doing something stupid.
At a bare minimum this mission requires an aerospace engineer/computer genius, a medical wizard/surgeon, and some sort of astrobiologist/physicist. Guess everyone else is applying for the remaining spot? Realistically they're going to need a flight specialist as well if they're going to be landing the dragon. lol

Re: Mars 2023
4 people totally isn't enough either. I imagine you'd need many more than that to ensure that people can defend themselves or maintain order if someone snaps. It's way too much money to risk on 4 people.

Re: Mars 2023
I'd agree with this. If you got 15 - 20 people, I think it would be more cost effective.Originally posted by hi19hi19Also why is "summon" in quotation marks as usually that signifies an alternate meaning like for example last night I "visited" your mother but it really means last night I "fucked her in the ass" so exactly what is the subtext of "summon" because I am not sure I am comfortable with the implications
Originally posted by m0deim usually the "nice guy" around these parts.. but this is bad, and you should feel bad. i would rather dip my balls in honey and hover them over a red ant hill than to ever hear such butchered crap.Comment

Re: Mars 2023
I think 4 confident and highly trained people is a lot safer to go with than 15 people who make way for more liabilities and potential for someone to freak out or screw something up. Unless all of them are trained by Nasa or something.
And yeah with what Reach said, I kind of don't see the point. Other than soil collection and finding certain samples for research, I think we can simulate a lot of whatever the conditions are back on earth and try to build and engineer ideas on earth FIRST. I think because of all their affiliations they somehow feel like they can skip this or something.

Re: Mars 2023
Columbus had no clue what he was doing, and had practically nothing to lose when he went to settle America. Mars we have been observing for decades looking it over for resources and life. Hell, I don't even think we're really trying to prove it has life anymore, probably more the fact that there's anything useful on it in the first place. In 10 years I don't see this movement even happening due to the cost and effectiveness.Yeah the fact that they sort of propose aimless exploration and don't have a specific reason to go forward with billions of dollars worth of preparation at stake, makes them out to look a bit sketchy. Columbus went looking west because there was no knowledge of more earth being on that side. We pretty well fully know what to expect when arriving on mars, its not like unobserved territory. Just unwalked.Comment

Re: Mars 2023
They don't actually want to send anyone to Mars. Don't you see? It's secretly a plan to try to create the Fantastic Four.

this is what they do on mars now. I don't think the future could be much better.
