The X-mod Project (Submissions are open)

Hey everyone, for some time I've been wanting to do an x-mod pack, because well, I love x-mod ^_^ I know I'm not some big name in the SM community, but I think this could end up being a great success. AJ, JenovaSephiroth and I will be reviewing the files for this, and I am open to another volunteer or two to help us out. Now as you know we are a little more lax normally on our simfile judging, and we're not going to be super strict here either, but the standards will be a bit higher than like we do for our custom engine. Also the more files you submit, the stricter we will get on judging your files.

    ~Rules~

    - Submissions must have at least two charts. We really want more users to enjoy the pack, and providing easier difficulties will do just that. *We are no longer making this mandatory, but would really prefer if you do at least two charts.
    - All song information must be filled out in the .sm file when we receive it. If we have anything labeled as "Unknown artist", it won't be judged. Similiarly, if the song title isn't properly labeled, your file will also be skipped.
    - All folders should have the song name, followed by the username in parentheses. Example: Overdrive (Saphira)
    - No dump files.
    - Gimmicks need to be make sense. Negative BPMs and negative stops are acceptable, just be sure they make sense with the song and aren't completely unreadable or unreasonable
    - Please do not use SM5 specific gimmicks, as people that use older versions of SM will not be able to play the gimmicks the way they are intended.
*We will accept some SM5 charts and do a side pack to go along with this one. But our main focus is for the older versions since that's what most people are still using.

    Other Information

    - Send all submissions to [email protected] - Please put the subject the same as your .zip folder. Songname (username)
    - You may submit as many charts as you'd like. Remember -- the more charts you get accepted, the harsher the judgment will be on future charts.
    - There is no length restriction, but try to be reasonable.
    - If you can submit graphics with your file, great. If not, we will add graphics for you.
    - I'm not going to set a cap for the pack just yet until I see how the flow of submissions is. Hopefully we get a good turnout though, as I'd like at least 30.

    Rejected

    MAX 888 (Bynary Fission)

    My Reviews

MAX 888 (Bynary Fission) - I love most of the gimmicks in this and think a lot of them were really well done. The steps are well done as well, but my issue is that even at 1x you're putting people at a ridiculous reading speed. Now I naturally read a high speed, but this is a bit to fast for even me. I don't feel I can accept this chart knowing that most people will not be able to play it at all because of the high reading speed. If it weren't for that I would accept without hesitation. Rejected

Atomic (Rin-Dude) - I love that this was stepped a little on the lighter side. Leaves it open for more players to enjoy it. Very fun chart to play. The gimmicks are very nicely done as well and most can be picked up pretty easily on sightread. That freaking quad gets me every time though (you know what I'm talking about) haha. Accepted

Steel Needle (JS) - Really really awesome gimmicks in this. I loved it. The chart is really well done as well but the 32nd trills are just a little too much I think with the overall difficulty of the file. They just feel super out of place. I really think they should be turned into rolls, or if you want to, step something different there. That's up to you, but I'm going to put this as conditional based on the 32nd trills. Conditionally Accepted

Galvanize (eastsideman09) - Man there's like no part of this file untouched with gimmicks, this must have taken you a while. Very well done imo, some of the gimmick tricks were really cool and it's pretty easy to pick up upon sightread. Just starts bugging my eyes once I get close to the end because there's just so much stutter going on haha. I like it. Accepted

Windowlicker (MrTea) - Like with Atomic it's kinda nice that this isn't too aggressively stepped so it can be enjoyed by a wide variety or players, plus you have all 4 difficulties which is really nice too. The gimmicks were really well done and easy to pick up on. Accepted

Gum (Kommisar) - Absolutely loved it. Fun chart and great gimmicks. Makes me sad that I can't really run SM5 Accepted

Release The Music (bmah) - Really loved this chart. The chart flows really nicely and the gimmicks were really cool, but quite tricky haha.
    Accepted

Get Up (Justin_ator) - I found this to be a lot of fun. The only gripe I have with it is that the arrows at the end of the long mine chains don't really give enough reaction time. I think because of that I'm going to have to conditional this. I'd just like to see a little more reaction time for players on those arrows. Otherwise I think it's really well done.
    Conditional

Let Me Hit It (Justin_ator) - This file is so much fun haha. I love it, the chart is pretty well done and the gimmicks are well done as well. There are a few spots I'd probably add some freezes personally, but that's just a personal preference. The only problem we found was that your negative gimmick is a little off. You have to hit late in order to hit the arrows and not trigger the mines. AJ says he can fix that though.
    Accepted

Release The Music (bmah) - I swore I had reviewed this already but apparently I didn't. I may have talked to you directly about this file or something. Absolutely love it, the charts great, the gimmicks are great, perfect addition to this pack.
    Accepted

Exhibition Match Perfect Version (Yoshl) - Theres only two things that bother me with the file. One is the minimal reaction time for the quads at the end of the holds but this isn't too bad to me. The real problem area for me is at 84.386s, it's almost impossible to hit some of the arrows after that hold. I'm still going to give this a light accept but I'd really like the thing at 84s fixed.
    Light Accept

    JS' Reviews

    MAX 888 (Bynary Fission)
It's... pretty bad, haha. It's entirely unpredictable to the point of unreadability, and the difference between the minimum and maximum speeds found in here make it even more unreadable.
    Reject

    Windowlicker (MrTea)
It's a bit light on the xmods, but it's still a lot of fun. It'll be really good for people who are just getting into playing this kind of file. The warps were a bit tricky, but most people should be able to nail them after playing it a couple of times.
    Accep

    Galvanize (eastsideman09)
No one will ever sightread this. With that said, this file is seriously amazing. Stutters and slowdowns the whole way through. It's a lot of fun.
    Strong Accep

    Atomic (Rin-Dude)
Very nice. A bit light on the xmods, but it's really nice that they're all hinted at through mines, so it's extremely doable even on sightread. Also, dat quad.
    Accep

    Gum (Kommisar)
I really like the warp-based effects that you have in here. It's pretty mindblowing. The beginning parts are really hard to read though. The speedups and switch-outs make it almost a test in reaction time, and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, haha. Maybe I'm just a wuss when it comes to speedreading.
    Strong Accep

    Overdrive (Saphira)
This was pretty cool. Some parts got pretty tricky on sightread, but this had some pretty great usage of stutters. I'm surprised that this was the only dubsteppy submission so far. I was expecting a lot more, haha.

Re: The Xmod Project (Submissions are open)

      Reserved for reviews.

Atomic (Kommisar) - Lightly stepped with very tasteful x-mod/gimmick usage peppered throughout. Mines serve as indicators of gimmicks, with them being directly attached to slowdowns for full indication of what's about to happen. Step rhetoric is typical to that of your normal Kommisar chart (a compliment, of course). Accepted.

Galvanize (eastsideman09) - there are a few gimmicks in here that are different in timing in comparison to their rhythms, and a lot of these changes aren't don't have any sort of visual indication within the chart, which can make the song tricky to play. However, all of the gimmicks are really well done, and despite the slightly lowered fun factor (from me), I can't turn my back to this. The patterns within the chart correspond well with the song, too. Accepted.

MAX 888 (Binary Fission) - some memorization in gimmick charts is alright here or there, but this chart is just ridiculous. The huge range of speeds required to effectively play this song either force players to read uncomfortably high, or uncomfortably low, both of which aren't fun. In addition to that, this chart takes an extreme amount of conditioning just to comprehend the structure, let alone do it well. I can't let this one in. Rejected.

Overdrive (Saphira) - mine usage is pretty tasteful, and sometimes tricky! Carries quite a bit of replay factor because the chart is very possible to score well on after only a few runs. Also, multiple difficulties = yay. Accepted.

Steel Needle (JS) - You're a ****ing lunatic with your tricks, jesus christ. Chart is very very very very light/underlayered and plays like a pad chart, which is perfectly fine! Everyone loves an indexable chart once in a while. However, the 32nd trills are disgusting difficulty spikes. Change them to rolls (12341234), or ITG rolls (you wouldn't be the first to do it ). Conditional acceptance.

Windowlicker (MrTea) - long, but not boring. There was a pretty cool negative BPM visual trick that caught my attention here too. File is overall light, but is enjoyable on a visual level with the occasional stutter here or there. Having multiple difficulties = a plus in my book, as well. Accepted.

      THIS PACK IS BACK, FUCKERS

      Contact [YOSHl]:
      ----------
BPM/stop structure: The BPM changes/structure of this file work excellently as a file that requires you to learn bits and pieces of a file. Replay value is exceedingly high because there are constant BPM changes, but they are not unreasonably done and follow the music appropriately. I personally am very fond of the structure and the execution of the chart's structure on an indirect level.

Patterning: The patterning is really well done until around 119 seconds in, where a few bursts have forced 16th mini-jacks. They are doable, but they're disproportionately harder than any of the patterns in the song without any accenting reasoning behind it.

Synopsis: Good file that emphasizes the necessity of learning the song as you play. Accepted.

      Exhibition Match Perfect Version [YOSHl]

      ----------
BPM/stop structure: A good majority of the BPM changes in this file simply don't have any merit. The sudden quad rushes are kinda neat and memorable, but the BPM changes that happen in between are just random and inconsistent.

Patterning: the patterning is fine. But the structure of BPMs needs a decent facelift.

Synopsis: Good patterning, but the file as a whole is very frustrating and doesn't have notable areas to remember/learn. Not accepted.

      Get Up [justin_ator]
      ----------
BPM/stop structure: Not bad at all! It gets quite difficult in the second half to learn even on a really low speed due to peaking upwards of 2000 BPM on some of the freezes. The concepts that you applied to the chart throughout the introduction/conclusion actually work quite nicely and are memorable.

Patterning: Patterning is alright. There are a few spots in the chorus where more steps could have been added to fill some more percussion sounds. The accenting in of some of the synthesized pitch-bends changed from triples in the intro/mid-section to quads at the very end -- why?

Synopsis: File is near acceptable, but the midsection's gimmicks are very difficult to learn because of BPMs that get quite high. Also, it seems like the file is slightly drifty. Conditional acceptance on midsection BPM changes being changed slightly.

Let Me Hit It (Audiostalkers Remix) [justin_ator]
      ----------
BPM/stop structure: Very much enjoyed this. Awesome placement. However, the file is slightly drifty during the chorus, and your stops might be the culprit of this.

Patterning: Patterning is very well done. Mine placement are indicative of where gimmicks happen and are clearly transcribed in a way where the player can see it a single time and not forget what happens.

Synopsis: Good file, but the sync is slightly messy. I can clean this one up myself, though. Accepted.

      Release the Music [bmah]

      ----------
      Fuck explaining BPM/stop/patterning structure.

      Synopsis: godly. Strongly accepted.

      Stop & GO! [Arntonach]
      ----------
Haven't quite decided how I feel about this yet.

I have a couple in mind I'm hoping to do. I still need to get into the swing of stepmania style stepping though. Too used to FFR and TS. But Kommi gave me some good pointers with Overdrive.
