          I once made a simfile by copying GD. Everyone loved it.

              I don't think having a good grasp of technical conventions and having your own sense of style and expression are mutually exclusive: that defeats the entire purpose of creation (though admittedly that has more to do with my personal philosophy of art). Like any creative activity, stepcharting has its own rules and standards, constructed over years of experimentation and discussion, but it also has room for personal exploration and self-expression. I think that qualifies it as an art just as much as it is a science.
