    RE: Green arrows

After my slight StepMania resurgence I've noticed quite a few files with green arrows (moches 100sec kitchen battle, for example) that didn't feel any different than 4th, 8th, 16th's etc during play. When I finally decided to open up DDReamstudio I noticed they were displayed as gray.

So what gives? Is this some sort of color-play technique that caught on or something? And what exactly is the idea behind it? My apologies for asking a question regarding something that is probably common knowledge.

    colour theory

accenting certain sounds using different colours instead of mines/holds/more arrows etc.

      Re: Green arrows

so how exactly do you go about implementing it? Tbh, I'm probably not gonna mess with it at all, if my current file is ever even completed to begin with. But from what I saw in ddreamstudio i saw they showed gray. do you somehow set it to what type of note you want it to appear as in-game? and if so, why does green seem to be the go-to choice?

        Re: Green arrows

usually they're offsetted by a 192nd late/early or something. they show up gray in ddream so they don't impact gameplay very heavily, but a lot of noteskins only have colours up to 64ths, which are green. ITG noteskins have 96ths/192nds and they're coloured gray.

in 3.9 all notes past 64ths are colored green

I currently can't recall if that's the case with sm5 though

aside from certain custom noteskins green was defaulted to 12ths and grey for 64ths/96ths/192nds iirc

              Re: Green arrows

the green notes in SM should actual display as grey from the get go, but most noteskins recycle the 64th note image for whatever reason.

in versions 3.95 and newer, there exist 96th and 192nd notes beyond the 64th note, which are typically used as the easiest method for colour theory without messing around with the bpm gimmicks and file sync in ddream. the shift in note is so insignificant that during gameplay, tapping them out as 4ths, 8ths, etc. will be perfectly fine, which makes them extremely useful for colour theory.

people (like myself in the past) go bizarre with colours (e.g. making a specific of the section of a file all red, blue, yellow, etc.) which requires some playing around with bpms in ddream. the colours really serve no other purpose than to further accentuate and intensify certain sections in a song. from a playability standpoint, when colour theory is used very conservatively, it adds a very nice creative touch to a file. although, most people should keep in mind that it is very easy to abuse colour theory and have too much colour in a file, which is why I like to stress conservative usage.

really, this entire colour theory trend picked up when moches, myself and a couple others started abusing it to sort of pay tribute to some older kil files, which made great use of the concept. ever since then, it's become a very common stepping technique that a fair majority of people use now.

well i use sm5 with jousway's notebar noteskin so I assume I'm receiving the full fuckin colors of the rainbow. Yeah, I've seen that in certain regards it has made files more enjoyable. But since I'm not exceptionally good at the game, I tend to get tripped up quite a bit when there's a lot going on in-game But I'm sure a bit more time will solve that.

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up.
