Button mashing is one of the skills.

Combined with the accuracy skill and the speed skill, it works fine.
If you only have mashing skill, it would be horrible.

Yes this is very true. Although mashing you will almost garunteed never get a AAA, because of the boo's and crazy difficult accuracy. If your a newb, try to only mash on parts you cannot read yet.

I think button mashing requires major skill. I fail as soon as I start mashing. Think of it like this...

You have hit all four arrows in an attempt to hit one. That's three boos and one hit. Now if you keep doing that you will fail any song damn near instantly.

to me there are two types of mashing,

1:mashing all 4 buttons at the same time very fast while not looking at the screen/not concentrating on the arrows or the beat getting hundreds of boos eventually failing out of the song = douche bag who needs to get some friends
2:mashing while concentrating on the arrows and trying your best to keep up with the song and not getting hundreds of boos and being able to make it through the entire song = skill
