Can we do something where everyone has a unique username but they are free to change their display name? So kinda like skype where everyone has their unique skype handle, but you can set your display name to whatever.

To keep things in check, a change log of display names would be good. Along with that, make it so that hovering over someone's display name shows their unique username, something along the lines of "Originally known as XXX"

This is a VERY solid idea. This is what a forum I visit on Proboards does, and it works just fine. +1 for this.

I'm glad other people seem to understand the problem I had with the idea of name change. These ideas are all pointing in the right direction, though I stay a bit on the skeptical side (sorry).

Anyway, the way Spitfire changed his username to Nullifidian seems to me like the worst way to do a name change: no announcement, no continuity, nothing. If it were not for this thread, I swear I would have thought that Nullifidian was a mod from the old days of ffr who just happened to log in recently

i vote we have a totally unrestricted name changes allowed except they must be the invocation or incarnation of multifaceted wordplay

in fact it should be mandatory and all those failing to produce a moderately clever username should just be banned from posting for all time

I made my username when I was 14 and I still think it's awesome.

On topic though, if this becomes a thing there needs to be good tracking of the changes and significant restrictions.
