If this becomes a thing, reading old forum posts will become hellish... As somebody who cares about this game history and who did what and when, I have seriously mixed feelings about this. I don't know, I feel there's a reason why communities generally don't allow name changes.

if you have a list of name changes or something, this doesn't really seem to be a problem? the previous posts of the user will be updated as well, maybe i'm not understanding something

Maybe somewhere under your profile picture it could say your previous username? Just a thought.

For a post's author, yes, but any reference within posts to others' posts would not update, causing it to be... more or less impossible to follow conversation.

On that note, I wonder if quotes would update as well (since they have username format too, but are not linked to the post itself for the name [see what I did to your quote YoshL])

maybe make multiple ways to pay, like vet, account age, credits, or real money (because that's the only way i'd ever be eligible)

Make a user wait 6 months or pay 500,000 credits to get a name change.

Keep it so that any posts made before the name change keep the old forum name, but it redirects to the same profile. That way you keep the history of the forums.

Have the best of every world by displaying the name a post was posted with, but under it in a smaller font "currently known as <current username>"

There's a much bigger incentive to collect credits if you can spend a small fortune for the perfect shitposting username.

To prevent impersonation, hold names for an amount of time, or even permanently, since you can already create posting alts, you might as well keep your stats

While this seems like a solution, it would prevent anyone from ever using any username that was ever used in the past, unless the username was simply a placeholder and not actually tied to a user ID still

I honestly don't believe that people should be able to use a username that was previously used anyway, so that wouldn't matter too much for me.

Can we do something where everyone has a unique username but they are free to change their display name? So kinda like skype where everyone has their unique skype handle, but you can set your display name to whatever.

To keep things in check, a change log of display names would be good. Along with that, make it so that hovering over someone's display name shows their unique username, something along the lines of "Originally known as XXX"
