My original post wasn't really about the fact D8 should or not be a thing but anyway.

Following the original motivation for divisions existing, even D7 in the past tournaments was inadequate.
But the idea that anyone joining a sport/e-sport tournament has or should have a real shot at 1st place is already very

If the files are hard enough, competition still exists to get past the cutoff of whatever rounds people in your skill bracket risk being eliminated.
This is also why I mentioned extending prizes in the D7 range. Despite not being able to realistically compete with the top of the top, you would still have motivation to put effort in the tournament.
And I won't even get into the fact that having identical prizes for lower divisions is already a charity of sorts.

And this is coming from someone who should be placed at the very low end of D7.

It honestly feels weird to make what I would consider a serious change to the structure so close to a tournament after sign ups have started, but if D7 likes the split and it's as easy as a few clicks to do then do it and worry about working everything else out afterwards

Honestly, just having a D8 where the obvious players are in and then making the cutoff obtaining like 8/10 of the AAAs they have in level 106+s or whatever would probably do in the sense that we're recognizing these players as better then the rest of D7, and anyone getting into D8 needs to just have the scores we see from them now. Cut and dry, easily defined, doneski.

I'm almost tempted to suggest we should redefined every division and make D1- D10, but that's something to do well after the tournament. I get that with prizes and rewards already in place that's unappealing but when IIDX outgrew it's rating system it got a better system so that should be considered.

But again, after this tournament.

Why 1-10, that just seems like you want "nice numbers" no ??? I mean I like my volume to be at multiples of 5 but really what other arguments would you have for 1-10 ? I'm confused

1-10 would kind of set the playerbase thin given current activity imho.

There is no good baseline for D8 on this game yet imo because there's a lack of files to even judge what the cutoff should be. Hard to judge a division cutoff with this small of a sample size of files. Though if I had to decide on a cutoff right now, it would at the very least be level 101, which still feels a little low honestly (edit: but those level 101 players are almost guaranteed to win D7 if they were the highest level there, there's already a huge gap between 99/100/101).

agreed. this was a last-moment decision which seems quite careless. if there will be a d8 it should be next year. And im a mid-low D7 player myself so D8 should benefit me, but i think if there is a D8 it should be different from this.

agreed. this was a last-moment decision which seems quite careless. if there will be a d8 it should be next year. And im a mid-low D7 player myself so D8 should benefit me, but i think if there is a D8 it should be different from this.

Maybe I'm absofuckinglutely losing my marbles but I'm almost positive what I'm doing right now is exactly how I did D7 in the 8th official.......

My other current dilemma is that the specialized color for the site and token was meant to be something special for reaching the top division. If we're changing the top, it invalidates those.

I'm not saying this to be a fucking dick, but it's sure gonna come off that way: this is likely the last official tourney. It'd be nice to not lock content of the game behind something that will inevitably become unobtainable and reworked in the line anyways.

As for the color, honestly I've never really put any thought into it but it just feels like an irrelevant quirk of being good and noteworthy on the site which TBH at that skill, everyone likely knows who you are anyways.

Both of these in my book are nonproblems, or ones that have better solutions.

But restructuring to stay within 7 divisions sounds better anyways.

I'm in favor of a D8 for this OT, but I feel like that's answering the wrong question. Love it or hate it, the division system needs to go. Why? Because it encourages holding yourself back, if you care about the prizes. Let's face it, anyone in D8 whose name is not SillyFangirl is facing a serious uphill battle, if not outright playing for second place, because they are effectively in "low D8". This is not a new concept, it's been a thing for as long as the divisional system has been. Anyone who enters a tournament in "low division X," especially in the higher divisions where improving skill quickly is more difficult, is basically screwed. But if these players, when nearing the top of their division just stop improving, play less, hold themselves back, and stay at the top of their division, they have a much better chance at a positive tournament outcome. FFR itself is a game about building one's skill, why do we have a system in place that actively punishes this?

it's natural progression of competition and past time for d8 given the skill gap of low d7 to high d7 since d7 was first made.

as to the late addition of d8 for this tourney it seems like a knee jerk reaction to the rato aaa which is a little late but it's still a reasonable decision. that monumental accomplishment only makes it more visibly obvious.
