I say yes only if they have different files and that implies that the staff must be confudent that we wont lack too many files in the future.

Here's the thing. I don't want to see the same three people in the top 3 for D7.
It makes the rest of the division have to competition or drive to get a decent placement.
The ceiling for the top level is so high we might as well separate in low, mid, and high D7.

And I don't want to hear arguments on "we don't have enough files for D8" either, since we're guaranteed to have all new files on the high end for the tournament.
And we can always open a 100+ Hard Songs Batch post-tournament.

So yes. No question in my mind we should have a D8.

Bottom line, I think there should be a D8.

Should there be D8 during this tournament? No.

As someone has mentioned, We can look over tournament results to get a good grasp on where the split for D7 & D8 lies. There has been more or less always a split in high D7 or low D7, across multiple tournaments, so it's literally no different from the past 3 officials.

If we want to expand the song choice to provide content for D8 players, we can do that after the tournament and have it ready for the next tournament.

I'm not sure I really get why people are concerned about the content for a D8 this tournament. If they're in D7 they're getting these files anyway. Splitting D8 off just gives a chance for other people to take a top place in D7 that otherwise would have 0 shot at it because the skill curve is pretty large.

Thing is, if there IS available content for D8, that's the better option than giving them the same files as D7. The more top difficulty files are released, the better this game will be that's for damn sure.

If there's no content for them yet (like files not judged yet or w/e), then yes the argument is 100% about giving a chance to low-mid D7, which personally idc (for the record I might join, not sure tho).

I figured. That'll change in the near-ish future but for now I suppose the choice is up to you to split D7 or not; in any case the line will be semi-arbitrary.

i'll start this by saying this is purely anecdotal but i have spent about 2 out of my 2.5 or so years of actively playing in mid-high d7 range, so in my opinion if i was still at low d7 i wouldnt want to compete against the highest ranked players like etienne or nate because they are just lightyears ahead of where low d7 is. they are still both at least like 2 years of playing ahead of where i am now (i can only definitively point to like 1 or maybe 2 scores i have on sm as d8) but i still feel like i have a chance to come out on top in this tournament.

then again, i dont believe it would be impossible to reach top 8 in the tournament as low d7, but top 5 is probably impossible. i agree with others in the thread who say that there arent enough files at a high level to officially have an 8th division, but for the tournament i like it. i think the decision lies in the lower d7 players if they want to compete against the people currently set in d8 or not.

I'm very surprised this is even a debate.


The difference between some of the best players in the world and the lowest D7 player is so monumental that it would be silly to include them in the same bracket. Yes, there's going to be some difference between the best and worst player in divisions, but not in the way that older tournaments brought with D7.

Doesn't matter much because divisions are pretty arbitrary, but even if D8 was like 103 to 106 that 4 levels range is like harder to go through than 1 to 103 so lol
