    Re: Drum'n'Bass discussion/How do I make it?

    Oh wow.

Well. I'll have Gorlock go into this sometime soon and I will put a more in depth reply tomorrow as well... But basically...

Favorite Artists/DJ's - Spor, Evol Intent, Donny, Counterstrike, Calyx, Teebee, Black Sun Empire, Ewun, Unknown Error, Noisia, Pendulum, Dieselboy, etcetcetc as a producer and a DJ myself, I definately keep my variety wide open as far as D'nB goes...

As far as guides... Just gotta google on how basic d'nb drum rythms are supposed to be sequenced... As far as software, I would definately recommend getting Acid Pro 6, especially since you are interested in producing D'nB which when making tracks are a living thing in itself and constantly changing... You'll see what I mean...

As far as equipment... It's all based on how INTO production you really want to be... Check out your local guitar center or something similar where you live...

Also as a little tip... Who do you consider your favorite d'nb artists? Because when starting out... Listen to them... Get ideas... Mimick at first to get the style down, then step outside the box and start producing your own original tracks... You don't have to reinvent the wheel...

Hope this helps I'll post more as well as Gorlock too

Another thing, Don't just use the amen break, make your own beats and get creative. People won't wanna hear the amen break used over and over in your music (unless you chop it up or change it around), but still be original.

                Drum'n'Bass is a simple recipe:
                1 Part Drum
                1 Part Bass
(Optional synths can be used for decoration.)

                Mix well.
                What?

Personally. I use vinyl. And will always use vinyl. Maybe.

A lot of the top DJ's right now are using CDJ's cuz that's the new technology... And that's cool and all...

But using vinyl, you literally feel the song and can see it in front of you... And if you wanna create sample loops, you can get the DJM 600/800 from Pioneer and set loops like you would be able to with CDJ's...

There is a huge debate on whether CDJ's or Vinyl should be used, but I don't even wanna get started, cuz I'll go on for hours haha

But if you wanna do a mix of both... Get the best of both worlds so to speek, you can try out using a dedicated laptop for example and using digital vinyl software with digital conversion records so you can use 'vinyl' with songs from your laptop...

But yeah. I would go with Vinyl. More expensive. But you feel like you have a greater bond with your records than you would with music bought on the internet and burned onto a CD.

But really it all just comes down to personal preference

You know, it's funny, I've made several forays into d'n'b myself, yet I still have not once used the Amen break. And since I'm one who loves chopping the crap out of samples and stuff, you'd think I would totally dig that sort of thing. Hell, I beat up a hip-hop beat in an abstract hip-hop track I made recently. It brought a grin to the lips of a fellow hip-hop producer of mine IRL. I guess I just haven't really cared enough to try slicing up Amen, since it's just been done so many times that I feel no need to. Of course, I still will sometime, I'm sure.

In terms of favorite artists, I haven't been exposed to a ton, but by far my favorite artist is Hive. Just something about the way he constructs his tracks, his ambient, sweeping openings and such, they're just mind-blowing. He, along with Keaton, Gridlok & Echo, were the ones who got me into d'n'b in the first place. Welcome to Violence, frigging amazing album. Plus, Hive's "Ultrasonic Sound" is just to awesome to not love. But yeah, aside from those for, Bad Company UK, Calyx, DJ Rap (whom I need more of), and Pendulum are my other d'n'b artists that I follow. And, like, holy crap, kids at my school actually have Pendulum on their MP3 players--it's craziness. :O At a school that's so dreadfully suburban, it just brings a tear to my eye to see something good happening to my school's musical tastes. (Read: SO WHITE, soooo much bad rap and emo rock... >_< )

EDIT: Ack, forgot to add my production input. FL Studio is severely underrated, and its Fruity Slicer is amazingly accurate at chopping up beats, especially, unlike ACID (Pro/Music Studio) where it's all done on-the-beat, mostly, and not actually where the snare, hi-hat, kick or cymbal is in the sample. That being said, ACID really is powerful--Danger Mouse produced The White Album completely in ACID Pro 3. I only have Music Studio 6.0 now, but I hope to eventually get Pro 6 (or 7, if it takes that long for me to get it... XP ) It's Beatmapper is really nice, too, for determining the BPM of MP3s and WAVs (and OGGs and WMAs?) without loop information. It's never right on the first try, but it's so easy to adjust it and make it right that it all balances out.

I use both. I like both, they are about the same to me and i used to be all about vinyl but some rare ones I've had I've lost and it sucks ass that I can't replace them..

i would not ever take ripped cds or music I don't legally own into a club to mix, but from home or house parties for fun I don't think its a big deal. And yeaaaah i got tired of carrying two milkcrates around with music, sometimes three, because hell, that was heavy
