    PC on or off

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering how everybody thinks about letting your pc on while you are not using it while you are at work, school or something like that.

I'm fellowing an edacution for system administrator.

My opinion is that is better to turn your pc off, because everytime you turn off your pc it refresh your RAM and register so your pc can run at full speed and it is better for your enery costs.

At the other hand the computer parts wear off more quick and it cost more time before your pc is fully started up.

What are the opinions about it?

I turn it off when I don't use it, because I steal interwebz from people.

Starting your computer from a "cold boot" causes a rush of power for a split second which isn't very great for your hardware, but other than that and boot time I don't really see any other advantages. With SSDs becoming more prominent boot times are going to be a fraction of what they used to very soon for most consumers. The power it takes to run your standard Desktop/Laptop with the screen off is still something to consider since a reboot really isn't such a big deal. Also I have a feeling the longer Windows is running which I use as my main station the more garbage it kinda picks up and has to roll with, or maybe it's just me and Windows doesn't do that like it used to. With the ARM processor architecture on the rise computers are going to be using a lot less power but that still isn't going to be for a little while for "Desktop users" if we still exist at that time.

But yeah anyway I think it's mostly a power issue and the fact that turning your computer off/on isn't a big deal. I only keep my server running 24/7.

It can be, but the electric network in The Netherlands is very stable and we don't have surges or other of that stuff. I heard somewhere the damage it could do to your hardware isn't really noticeable.

And yeah i have the same feeling about Windows too. That's why i reboot everyday for a clean register and RAM-memory.

When my desktop worked I kept it on all the time. Now that I'm on my laptop all the time I just turn it off before bed.

I hear the power in Europe is a lot cleaner but there's still that initial power surge when you turn your system on. Probably won't ever notice anything though, just something I remember from Hardware 101. Also, IMO laptops are terrible to leave on all the time. Those things run so hot.

                    Re: PC on or off

Ah, the age-old question of "Which is better for my computer? Turn it off or leave it on when I'm not using it?"

I'll tell you right now you will get conflicting answers depending who you ask, even among professionals.

Basically the initial power surge when you turn your computer on isn't good and produces microscopic wear and tear but leaving your computer on will produce wear and tear as well.

I would say don't excessively or obsessively turn your machine on-and-off, but, other than that, do what you want. Putting a nice UPS between your computer and the power outlet isn't a bad idea either.

I leave my computer on for thousands of hours. It's a vista, so it takes lifetimes to turn on and off. xD

Won't leave it on over night, would leave it on if I left my house at 1 or something, even if I wouldn't be back for several hours.

Yeah that's true and lifetime of your laptop would degree much quicker when i leave it on.

But i still have the same about desktop parts if you left it on all the time the lifetime would be also shorter in my opinion.
