Technically, it does mean "it is" in terms of usage, but not meaning. Trying to simple translate "desu" to a straight "is," however, is not correct. It's technically a more polite form of "da" which has the same meaning, but usually the word isn't even needed. "Ore wa Rubix" is the same as "Watashi wa Rubix desu." You can conjugate desu into something like "de****a" or "datta" for past tense: "Kare wa baka datta" -> "He was an idiot"

It isn't *technically* correct to say desu has a literal translation, but "it is" is probably the most accurate, if you had to slap a meaning to it.

You can use si instead of shi. It's still correct, and avoids censor.
