Double posting is what some people do when they want to reply to several different people. Else, they do it because they forgot something and felt the need to add it in. This is the annoying one.
The proper protocol is just to indicate to whom you are speaking when you switch your conversation over to someone else. If you missed something in your first post, you have about 90 seconds to edit it without the "edited" tag showing up on the bottom of your post, thus making it appear that you got it right on your first try.
When you make a post and then realize a mistake or want to add on/subtract from what you said, you should edit. The only time I ever double-post is when the thread has not moved since I posted in it but I want to make a post unrelated to my last. Then the thread is bumped (indicating new discussion) and my two separate ideas are, well, separate.
I delete my last post then make a new one to bump threads.
