Index is just fun! I've always been an index player and probrably always will be
Needless to say, I feel like i've hit a brick wall as far as progression in skill goes tho =/

What Jerry said, either you can enjoy playing index and have to deal with JS or you can go spread and have to suffer with runningmen.
There are more JS files than there are runningmen

I'm better at running men than JS, but I'm just weird like that.

The thing I've noticed about the best index players (which is really just one finger on each hand...you can do index style with your middle fingers, for example) is that on files that play to their strengths, their accuracy and speed in straight streams often surpasses a spread player of comparable ability. However, spread (the first two fingers on each hand: ring/pinky is called pettanko, middle/ring is semi-pettanko) gives the player a better chance of doing well on a wider variety of patterns, hence why it's the preferred method.

Also, it's not unheard of these days for files to be made with a particular setup in mind. Part of this is probably natural bias on the part of the sim artist, but there is definitely some amount of deliberate pattern choice that goes on.

To sum up what others have said, though, it all depends on what you want out of the game. People have gotten some damn good scores with all sorts of imaginable setups--in one infamous case, there was a tournament in which the host required all scores to be achieved using one's penis to hit the keys. (And you thought YOUR keyboard was filthy!)
