Hey, I was just wondering if there were any people who have stuck with using the index style (up, down, left, right arrows) instead of spread style (qwerty keyboard)? Because I've gotten so used to index style that I can't get used to spread style. However, it's so tricky doing those jumpsreams using index style. Any tips?

Re: Using index instead of spread style
it just depends on what you care about more, being a better player or having fun. Hate to be that black and white but you will always have a higher potential with spread. Some players like the ddr feel index brings and it is definitely a unique way to play. Spread is weird at first but once you get used to it you can have a lot of fun with it as well

Re: Using index instead of spread style
Spread is the only way to survive in FFR tournies anymore unless you're like godly at index/one hand
I was stuck to index but simply tapping fingers to music trying to build up the speed and stamina and then switching over makes it kinda eh. I can't play Index nearly as well as I used to.Comment

Re: Using index instead of spread style
What Jerry said, either you can enjoy playing index and have to deal with JS or you can go spread and have to suffer with runningmen.
There are more JS files than there are runningmen

Re: Using index instead of spread style
Like Jerry said, if you're in it to win it, you need to learn spread. Otherwise, just stick to what you like best, because nobody's stopping you. I use spread because I taught myself how,but it's not that hard though. Just takes some time to get used to.Originally posted by hi19hi19Also why is "summon" in quotation marks as usually that signifies an alternate meaning like for example last night I "visited" your mother but it really means last night I "fucked her in the ass" so exactly what is the subtext of "summon" because I am not sure I am comfortable with the implications

Re: Using index instead of spread style
Yeah the statement of Jerry is a good one. When you used to play spread the Jumpstreams are easier.
Playing one handed is also a more dangerous playstyle, because the chance is higher to get wrist pain especially on high songs.
@liewser There are enough top one handers like Bynary Fission.

Re: Using index instead of spread style
I got to the point where I could FC 10s/11s and AAA 7s index, so you can get "impress your friends" good if that matters.
Try adding in middle fingers on some patterns, like a lot of the ones in Blooddrunk.
People have AAA'd some 11s index/one handed, so you can still be pro, and its way more impressive that way.Comment

Re: Using index instead of spread style
As an index player with around 10 years of stepmania experience, my advice for getting higher tier specifically at FFR is to learn spread. I have 1g on Monsterous Turtles, SDG on Vertex Beta, and similar scores on other indexable stuff here, and on SM I can stream upto 240ish with decent FA, but with 2 fingers there is no good way of hitting fast JS or hands (triples, quads, whatever), and most 10s and upwards are untouchable with 2 fingers.
But don't let that mean you have to! There are still plenty of songs here that are fun on index (CIA Rave, Vertex Beta, Monstrous Turtles, Midnight, Blaze, Rose, etc), and even some songs with easy jumps are AAA-able. Etude to a Dragon wasn't too hard, for instance. Make an index scores thread, I'd join that! Kmay is another awesome index player too, and I'm sure there are others

This guy is a good index player: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/profile/Kairon
You can definitely get pretty good at index and impress people... you just won't be able to get good scores on some songs. It's up to you. To be honest, not everyone has the potential to be a top 10 FFR player anyway
Best AAA: Policy In The Sky [Oni] (81)
Best SDG: PANTS (86)
Best FC: Future Invasion (93)Comment

Re: Using index instead of spread style
People say do what you enjoy most, but it's obvious that you'll never be quite as good as if you were playing spread. Obviously if you have fun playing index vs. spread then use index simply because the game is about having fun.
But if the reason you don't want to switch is because you're not nearly as good RIGHT NOW at spread than you are at index, trust me it's worth it.
I played index for over 2 years and still only managed mostly very challenging songs. I switched to spread because jumpstreams and pretty much jumps are the #1 enemy, and switching to spread was the best decision I've ever made in FFR
How to start an argument online:
Step 1) Express an opinion
Step 2) Wait....

Re: Using index instead of spread style
Using the arrow keys isn't necessarily utilizing the index style. Index playing is simply playing with your two index fingers (see the above posted video). Not many people play this way anymore. It's a very inflexible method that, while more closely mimics the movement of playing on a dance pad with your feet, doesn't fare well against certain arrow patterns (particular one that would require "double tapping" on one finger).Hey, I was just wondering if there were any people who have stuck with using the index style (up, down, left, right arrows) instead of spread style (qwerty keyboard)? Now if you're simply referring to playing with the arrow keys, then a lot more people play like that, even though it is still less common than playing with a spread setup such as ASKL. For many years, I played with the arrow keys and did very well on it. You can still play pretty competitively by using the arrow keys.Comment
