Hepcat has a good point. If you give the money straight up, you wont get anything; however, if you take the money first, then give it, it will lead to the reception of some form of graditude.

The fact is, you cannot, under any scenario, receive anything back from that person. That includes inheretence.
Your grandmother will either take it to the grave, like an Egyptian Pharoah; forget to write a will; or even just choose another decendant as an heir to her throne.

This would be a lot better if you told us whether we get to choose who gets the money. If the money goes to any of my family members [who aren't mental] I would most likely do that. If the money goes to a random person, I would most likely take the money.

Even if I got to choose who got it, I would choose A. The money (about £5,000) would go towards the money I already need for to get a mortgage on a house, save up for a wedding, and generally get about living.
There is nobody I know, in my own life, who honestly needs money for the future like I would. Most I know would spend it on frivolous purposes, which would just annoy me.
And anyway, if I took it, you could bet that I would end up sharing it somehow. Like when I already got money, I gave my parents some for a holiday and what not. So really, if you take the money yourself then you can share it out amongst more people, which seems far better than taking the entire lump sum and giving it to one person.
