    Re: Is nothing something?

Define "something." I take it as an object that is tangible. I can touch or see it. I definitely cannot see nothing. I always see light beams bouncing off the object unless I am blind. Then I see a mixture of black and greys. I cannot touch nothing. I am always touching something that exists. I'm stupid.

Just because you can't "touch" an object doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

        Key example: air.

I think he also meant being able to feel it as well. The main point that is getting across is that something refers to an object or a force that we can describe with our senses.

The only thing that is truly not something is a thing that does not refer to anything. "Nothing" refers to the concept of "no things" and therefore is something.

That of course depends on what your definition of Something is. Like some people have said they only refer to something as being something perceived with the senses. In this case a reference to an idea doesnt count as something.

you cant see them or touch them or smell them or taste them or hear them
                but they exist
                also
what about an abstract concept? like hate. you cant really use your sences to precieve hate itself but its still somthing

                    Re: Is nothing something?

Nothing is a word used to communicate the idea of null. It is used in a variety of ways. It depends on the object in question. It is completely perpsective based and subjective.

Say we're discussing apples in a basket. When they are all gone. You can correctly say "There is nothing left in the basket" When in fact there is air, there is space, there are tiny bits of matter.

It can be used on a more serious topic to describe a void of complete non-existance which is also simply a concept of the mind which does not actually exist.

It all depends on the context of how the word is used.

In the end though, "nothing" is a word, an idea, and that in and of itself makes it something, because we can give definition to it. Definition as an idea that can only completely exist in theory.

Nothing (the word its self) is impossible because if the word is there then theres something. And there cant be nothing if something is there, right?

thx, but yea these are indeed one of those questions that plague us. I had a similiar post on "Existance" and it really just roots back to religion.
